Chapter 3 - The Locked Doors and the Blank Screen

3 - 15
Julian stood frozen in the center of the darkened executive bullpen, his heart hammering against his ribs as his eyes remained fixed on the glowing monitor across the room. The silence of the empty floor felt heavy, almost suffocating, broken only by the faint hum of the central air conditioning units overhead.
Slowly, step by cautious step, Julian walked across the industrial carpet until he was standing directly in front of the workstation. He reached out a slightly trembling hand and tapped the spacebar on the wireless keyboard.
The blinking cursor vanished, replaced by a line of clean, sans-serif text that began typing itself across the screen in real time, character by character, as if someone thousands of miles away were communicating with him directly:
SESSION IDENTIFIER: VANCE_J_TERMINATED.
GLOBAL AUTHENTICATION OVERRIDE: SUCCESSFUL.
ASSET CONTROL STATUS: TRANSFERRED TO VANCE FAMILY HOLDINGS LLC.
WELCOME, MR. VANCE. PLEASE SURRENDER YOUR CREDENTIALS.
Julian slammed his hand down onto the desk, knocking a plastic pen holder clattering to the floor. “What is this stupid joke?” he shouted into the empty room, his voice cracking slightly with panic. “Who authorized this script? Where is IT? Where is my administrative staff?”
He reached for his phone again, his fingers fumbling frantically against the glass screen as he dialed his chief financial officer, Arthur Pendelton. Arthur was a timid, career bureaucrat who owed every promotion to Julian’s aggressive deal-making. He would know what was going on.
The phone rang once. Twice. Three times.
On the fourth ring, a click echoed through the speaker, followed by a heavy, uncomfortable silence.
“Arthur!” Julian barked, not waiting for a greeting. “What the hell is going on on the executive floor? My keycard is locked, the private elevator is offline, and some idiot left a bizarre prank script running on the terminals. Get down here right now with the IT director before I fire the entire department!”
A long pause stretched across the line. When Arthur finally spoke, his voice sounded flat, distant, and entirely drained of its usual nervous energy.
“Julian,” Arthur said quietly. “You shouldn't be calling this number.”
Julian froze, his hand tightening around his phone until his knuckles turned white. “What are you talking about? I am your CEO! Get your ass down to the twelfth floor in five minutes or—"
“I am no longer your CFO, Julian,” Arthur interrupted, cutting him off with cold finality. “As of 4:00 AM, my employment contract was terminated by the parent holding trust. My new reporting line is directly to Sterling Vance’s office.”
The name hit Julian like a physical blow to the chest. Sterling Vance.
For nine years, Julian had known that his wife, Elena, came from old money—money that was whispered about in southern financial circles, money managed by distant family trusts and silent advisory boards. But in all that time, Elena had never once flaunted her family’s wealth. She drove a modest SUV, dressed in understated designer clothes without flashy logos, and spent most of her time reviewing architectural blue-prints and market analysis reports rather than attending high-society charity galas. Whenever Julian asked about her father, Elena would simply smile gently and say, “My father prefers to stay out of the hospitality business, Julian. He likes his privacy.”
Julian had foolishly assumed that Elena’s family was merely comfortable—perhaps worth a few tens of millions accumulated through regional real estate investments. Nothing that could ever rival his own self-made brilliance.
“You’re talking about Elena’s family,” Julian said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, disbelieving whisper. “That’s impossible. Elena’s father is a retired land speculator. This company—this entire resort network—was built by me. I secured the initial capital. I negotiated the development loans!”
“Did you, Julian?” Arthur asked softly, a trace of pity finally bleeding through his tone. “Did you ever actually look at the original loan guarantees? Did you ever wonder why every major institutional lender in New York approved your expansion proposals within twenty-four hours without demanding personal collateral?”
Julian couldn't breathe. The air in the executive floor suddenly felt thin, freezing cold.
“Because,” Arthur continued mercilessly, “you were never borrowing against your own name. You were borrowing against a multi-billion-dollar irrevocable family trust that your wife’s grandfather established in 1952. You were the frontman, Julian. You were the ambitious, handsome face placed at the podium so the real owners could remain entirely invisible.”
“You’re lying,” Julian snarled, his face flushing a furious, mottled red. “You’re part of some pathetic coup orchestrated by a bitter, rejected wife! I built this empire with my bare hands!”
“Check your corporate email, Julian,” Arthur said, his voice hardening. “If your password still works. Goodbye, Mr. Vance.”
Click.
The line went dead.
Julian stood paralyzed in the dark room, his phone still pressed against his ear. Slowly, with trembling fingers, he tapped the browser icon on his phone and navigated to the internal corporate webmail portal.
He typed in his executive login: [email protected].
He entered his complex, twenty-character master password.
He hit Enter.
A red banner flashed instantly across the top of the screen: ACCOUNT SUSPENDED PERMANENTLY. PERMISSION DENIED.
Beneath the banner, a PDF attachment was waiting for him, addressed simply to: To Whom It May Concern (Formerly Julian Vance).
Without thinking, Julian tapped the PDF. The document opened instantly, revealing a single page bearing the official, embossed golden seal of Vance Family Holdings LLC, signed at the bottom by a name that sent a chill straight to his marrow:
Sterling Vance, Managing Trustee.
Elena Vance, Primary Beneficiary & Majority Shareholder.
And right below their signatures, a final, chilling sentence spelled out the absolute reality of his waking nightmare:
You are hereby evicted from all properties, assets, and executive positions belonging to Vance Family Holdings, effective immediately. Please vacate the premises within sixty minutes, or local law enforcement will be dispatched to remove you as a trespasser.
Julian stared at the phone screen, his mind refusing to process the words. He had thrown Elena out of the lobby less than twelve hours ago, gloating in front of his mistress, believing he was the king of the world.
Now, standing in the dark, locked out of his own office, Julian realized a terrifying truth:
He didn't own the empire.
May you like
He didn't even own the clothes on his back.
And the woman he had just cast aside was the one holding the key to the entire cage.
