Chapter 10 - The Unraveling of Chloe

10 - 15
While the global restructuring of Vance Hospitality Group was being broadcasted to thousands of hospitality professionals worldwide, Chloe was experiencing a much more localized, highly uncomfortable reality check on the other side of town.
After fleeing from the alleyway where Julian had been reduced to guarding three cardboard boxes, Chloe had confidently retreated to her luxury apartment in the upscale Gulch district of Nashville. She had convinced herself that her association with Julian Vance was merely a temporary setback—that even if Julian had lost his corporate throne, he surely had secret stash accounts, hidden cash reserves, or wealthy connections that would bail him out by evening.
She poured herself a glass of chilled champagne, kicked off her designer heels, and turned on the local news network, expecting to see a scandalous, dramatic interview featuring Julian defending his honor against a bitter corporate coup.
Instead, she saw my face dominating the screen.
“Elena Vance assumes full operational control of Vance Hospitality Group...”
Chloe choked on her champagne, coughing violently as she stared at the television screen in absolute horror. She watched as financial analysts detailed the complete and total annihilation of Julian’s professional existence—not just his firing, but the freezing of all corporate assets, the federal fraud indictments, and the seizure of every luxury vehicle, penthouse lease, and discretionary expense account tied to his name.
Her phone buzzed violently on the coffee table.
She snatched it up, hoping against hope that it was Julian with good news. Instead, the caller ID flashed: LANDLORD - RESIDENTIAL LEASE MANAGEMENT.
Chloe swiped to answer, her voice shaking slightly. “Hello?”
“Ms. Hart,” a cold, professional voice echoed through the speaker. “I am calling regarding the monthly lease payment for unit 1402 at The Meridian. Your automatic rent draft scheduled for this morning was declined due to an insufficient funds notification from your linked financial institution.”
Chloe’s heart skipped a beat. “Declined? That’s impossible! Check the secondary account—the corporate retainage card ending in 4492!”
“That card,” the landlord replied coldly, “was flagged and rejected by the issuing bank’s fraud prevention unit at 8:00 AM this morning per instructions from Vance Family Holdings Legal Counsel. Furthermore, our records indicate that your entire lease agreement was co-signed and financially guaranteed by Julian Vance via corporate subsidiary funds.”
“So?” Chloe stammered, panic rising in her throat. “Just charge it to him!”
“Mr. Vance no longer has corporate signing authority, Ms. Hart. His accounts have been frozen under federal investigation. Therefore, your lease guarantee is null and void.”
“Wait! You can't just evict me! I have designer clothes in here! I have—!”
“You have until 5:00 PM today to vacate the premises, Ms. Hart,” the landlord interrupted sharply. “Or our legal team will initiate formal eviction proceedings for trespassing and unpaid tenancy. Have a pleasant afternoon.”
Click.
The line went dead.
Chloe stood frozen in the center of her luxurious living room, the glass of champagne slipping from her fingers and shattering against the hardwood floor, splashing golden liquid across her designer rug.
The reality of what she had done finally crashed down upon her like a collapsing avalanche. She had hitched her entire wagon to a man she believed was an untouchable titan, mocking his wife, parading around in stolen luxury items, and abandoning Julian the exact second his stolen crown slipped from his head.
Now, she was left with nothing. No sugar daddy. No luxury penthouse. No corporate credit cards. Just a stack of unpaid bills, a canceled lease, and the sudden, terrifying realization that gold-digging without a background check is a remarkably dangerous profession.
She rushed to her bedroom closet, ripping open the doors, and began frantically throwing clothes into an oversized designer suitcase. But as she tossed her expensive dresses and shoes into the bag, a cold, sickening thought stopped her hands in mid-air.
Every single designer bag, every diamond bracelet Julian had gifted her during their months together, every high-end outfit hanging in her closet—had all been purchased using corporate expense accounts linked to the very subsidiary trusts that Vance Family Holdings had spent the morning seizing as stolen property.

Which meant federal investigators could show up at her door at any moment to repossess every single luxury item she owned as proceeds of corporate fraud.
Without wasting another second, Chloe dropped the suitcase, kicked off her heels, grabbed her car keys and her phone, and ran out the door of the apartment, abandoning the glamorous life she thought she had successfully stolen—leaving behind a trail of broken illusions and a very expensive mess she could never hope to clean up.
