Chapter 13 - The Truth About the Robe-13

One year after the morning in the kitchen, a final, symbolic chapter of my past was brought to a permanent close.
I received a written notification from the Federal Women’s Correctional Facility in West Virginia, where Vanessa Crowley was serving her twelve-year sentence for corporate fraud and conspiracy.
Through her public defender, Vanessa had submitted three formal requests to send a letter of apology to me, claiming she wanted to "seek forgiveness and provide closure regarding the events at the estate."
I sat at my desk in the Miller Health Tower, looking at the unopened white envelope resting on the polished mahogany wood.
Beside it sat a newly delivered package from my sister, Clara—a beautifully wrapped box containing a brand-new, pale blue silk robe, identical to the one Vanessa had worn on that terrible morning.
Attached to the new robe was a small card from Clara: “To replace the one that was ruined. Wear it in your new life, sister.”
I picked up the unopened letter from Vanessa Crowley.
I didn't open it. I didn't read her excuses, her apologies, or her pathetic attempts to blame Dean for her own choices. I didn't need her closure, because my closure was already written in the laughter of my son, the strength of my father’s legacy, and the absolute peace of my home.
I walked over to the paper shredder beside my desk, dropped Vanessa’s unopened letter into the slot, and watched as the machine quietly reduced it to fine, meaningless dust.

Then I picked up the new silk robe, wrapped it carefully in tissue paper, and placed it inside my weekend travel bag for my trip to the lake house.
Some things from the past were worth replacing. Others were meant to be shredded and forgotten forever.
