Chapter 7 - The Coalition of the Forgotten

The sun dipped below the horizon, painting the Chicago skyline in bruised shades of purple and charcoal. Inside my home office, the blinds were drawn tightly shut, casting long, dramatic shadows across the floor. I sat in the darkness, illuminating only by the pale blue glow of my laptop screen, listening to the soft, rhythmic breathing of Emily sleeping soundly down the hall.
My phone vibrated violently against the wooden desk.
I picked it up on the first ring.
“Talk to me, Marcus,” I whispered.
“I pulled the files from the municipal clerk’s database using an emergency injunction loophole,” Marcus Vance’s voice came through the speaker, tight and grim. “Richard, she wasn't bluffing about the asset freeze. The prenuptial trust was filed under a corporate shell called Sterling & Vance Holdings. Her father signed off on the magistrate level. Legally speaking, they have a stranglehold on your property and your business accounts.”
I gripped the edge of the desk so hard my knuckles turned white. “There has to be a flaw. A loophole. She forged my signature on half those clauses!”
“Proving forgery on a notarized document executed during a real estate refinancing is an uphill battle that could take months in civil court,” Marcus replied flatly. “And while we’re bogged down in depositions, Judge Sterling’s family court connections can easily fast-track a custody petition claiming you’re financially unstable and emotionally erratic. They can strip you of Emily by Friday.”
A cold sweat broke out across the back of my neck. Friday. Less than four days away.
“So what do we do?” I demanded. “Just roll over and hand my daughter to a psychopath?”
“No,” Marcus said, a sudden, sharp edge of steel entering his voice. “We don't roll over. But we don't fight them in their own courtroom, either. Judge Sterling owns the civil and family divisions in this county. If we want to beat them, we have to take the fight out of their jurisdiction entirely.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means we find the bodies they buried before they started building this empire,” Marcus explained. “Judge Sterling didn't become a multi-million-dollar municipal magistrate by playing clean. Over the past twenty years, at least a dozen high-profile civil suits involving real estate fraud, corporate embezzlement, and suspicious property foreclosures were abruptly dismissed in his courtroom.”
I leaned forward, my architectural training kicking in, analyzing the structural weak points of an enemy I previously thought was invincible. “You’re talking about systemic corruption.”
“I’m talking about a paper trail,” Marcus corrected. “And I happen to know a federal investigator who was forced into early retirement ten years ago after the Justice Department mysteriously dropped a massive probe into Judge Sterling’s real estate holdings.”
“Who?”
“Detective Miller,” Marcus said. “He lives off the grid in a cabin up in Lake Geneva. If anyone has the missing pieces that can tear down the Sterling dynasty from the inside out, it’s him.”
I glanced down the dark hallway toward Emily’s bedroom. Leaving her alone in the house right now was a massive risk, but staying here meant walking directly into Rebecca’s legal guillotine by Friday morning.
“Send me the address,” I said quietly.
“Be careful, Richard,” Marcus warned before hanging up. “If Rebecca or her father catch wind of what you’re doing, they won't just evict you. They will bury you so deep you’ll never see your daughter again.”
The screen went dark.
I stood up, walked into Emily’s room to check on her one last time, and gently pulled the blanket up over her shoulders. She stirred slightly, whispering something about her mother, and instinctively curled her small arms around a stuffed bear I had bought her for her birthday.
My chest ached with a fierce, burning love. I would tear down federal institutions, burn corrupt courtrooms to the ground, and walk through hell itself before I let anyone take her away from me.

Twenty minutes later, I packed a small duffel bag, grabbed the titanium flash drive from the hidden floor vent, and slipped out through the back door into the chilly night air.
The hunt had officially begun. And the Sterling family was about to discover what happens when you corner a father with nothing left to lose.
