Chapter 10 - The Bait on Wabash Avenue

-10-
The gray, dreary light of dawn was just beginning to break over the Chicago skyline when I pulled my sedan into the subterranean loading dock of the abandoned architectural archive on Wabash Avenue. The building was an imposing, turn-of-the-century brick monolith covered in heavy iron fire escapes and soot-stained masonry—the exact kind of forgotten industrial relic I used to admire during my early days as an urban preservation architect.
I unlocked the heavy iron basement door, slipping inside into the cool, dust-filled air of the subterranean vault.
It was a sprawling underground labyrinth lined with floor-to-ceiling metal shelving units, old drafting boards, and rows of locked steel cabinets. Miller’s safehouse was practically a fortress disguised as a junk heap.
My phone vibrated in my pocket. It was an encrypted text message from Marcus Vance.
“Sterling’s legal team just filed an emergency ex-parte custody petition with the morning docket. Judge Sterling himself signed off on a temporary writ of attachment for the child, citing ‘imminent parental endangerment and flight risk.’ They’re coming for Emily, Richard. Act now.”
The cold panic that flashed through my chest was instantly extinguished by a surge of pure, calculated adrenaline. They hadn't waited until Friday. They were moving right now, using their corrupt judicial pipeline to snatch my daughter under the color of legal authority.
I immediately dialed Marcus back on his secure line.
“Marcus, I got the text. Where are you?”
“I’m sitting outside your townhouse in an unmarked sedan,” Marcus whispered urgently through the phone. “Two municipal squad cars and a private bailiff van just pulled into your driveway. They’re walking up to the front door right now with battering rams and paperwork.”
“Are they inside yet?”
“Not yet, but they’re about to breach the front lock—wait, hold on,” Marcus paused, his voice dropping into a breathless hiss. “The front door just opened. Someone let them in.”
My breath caught in my throat. “Who let them in? I locked the door when I left!”
“It’s... holy hell,” Marcus gasped. “It’s the nanny. She’s handing Emily over to the bailiffs. She’s holding a pre-signed release form and pointing upstairs to your bedroom!”
The betrayal cut deeper than a knife. The nanny—a woman we had trusted for three years, whom we paid generously and treated like family—had been on Rebecca’s payroll all along, waiting for the exact moment to deliver my daughter like a parcel on a silver platter.
“Marcus, listen to me,” I ordered, my voice dropping into an absolute, commanding roar. “Do not let them leave that driveway. Follow that bailiff van. Track every single turn they make.”
“Where are they taking her?” Marcus asked, his engine revving quietly in the background.
“They aren't taking her to a state facility,” I said, my grip on the phone tightening until my fingers ached. “They’re taking her straight to the Oakridge Behavioral Institute upstate. That’s where Rebecca’s shell corporation has its private holding cells.”
“Got it. I’m on their bumper.”
The line went dead.
I turned around in the dim basement vault, my eyes locking onto the massive, encrypted laptop sitting on the steel drafting table. The flash drive containing the entire Sterling family’s financial empire, criminal conspiracy, and forged real estate empire was glowing softly in the dark.
It was time to spring the trap.
I plugged my secure satellite modem into the laptop, pulled up the federal anti-corruption task force’s encrypted submission portal that Detective Miller had provided, and uploaded the entire dossier with a single, definitive keystroke.
UPLOAD COMPLETE - SECURE PACKET DELIVERED TO WAKEFIELD, D.C.
A microsecond later, my phone pinged with an automated federal receipt confirmation, followed immediately by an incoming call from an unlisted, out-of-state area code.
I answered it instantly.
“This is Special Agent Vance of the Federal Anti-Corruption Bureau,” a crisp, authoritative voice echoed through the speaker. “We’ve just decrypted your submission packet regarding Judge Arthur Sterling and Sterling & Vance Holdings. Mr. Vance... do you have any idea what you’ve just handed us?”
“I handed you the blueprint of a twenty-five-year municipal conspiracy,” I said, my voice ice-cold. “And right now, the primary architect of that conspiracy is currently using a corrupt judicial writ to kidnap my seven-year-old daughter to an off-the-books facility upstate.”

There was a sharp, decisive pause on the other end of the line.
“Agent Miller briefed us this morning to expect your call,” the federal agent said, his tone shifting into immediate tactical execution. “Sit tight, Mr. Vance. We’re dispatching federal marshals to intercept that bailiff van right now. And as for Judge Sterling... his gavel is about to be permanently silenced.”
