Chapter 2 - THE INTERCOM ARCHIVES

The audio file began with a sharp, electronic hum followed by the distinct sound of a heavy oak door clicking shut. For a moment, there was only the ambient white noise of the estate’s ventilation system. Then, a voice cut through the speakers—crisp, cool, and unmistakably Victoria’s.
"She’s becoming entirely too difficult to manage," the recorded Victoria said, her tone dripping with a casual, chilling contempt that bore no resemblance to the weeping, devoted stepmother she had pretended to be just moments ago. "Every time I try to alter her inheritance structure to favor the new trust, Leo starts asking questions about Sarah’s remaining clauses. The child looks at me with those big, accusing eyes of hers, just like her mother used to. It’s sickening."
In the grand salon, the real Victoria stared at the ceiling speaker as if it were a venomous snake about to strike. Her chest heaved beneath the emerald silk, her breath coming in short, panicked gasps.
"Well, the girl has a weak chest anyway," a second voice replied from the audio playback—a smooth, raspy baritone that Leo instantly recognized as belonging to Marcus Vance, Victoria’s cousin and the chief legal counsel for Rossi Global Enterprises. "A bad asthma attack during a particularly cold night in the east wing... nobody would question it. Children with chronic respiratory issues are terribly fragile, Victoria. Doctors sign off on those death certificates every single day without blinking an eye."
Leo’s hand curled into a fist so tight his knuckles turned white. He didn't look at Victoria; his eyes were fixed on the polished marble floor at his feet, his mind processing the horrific architecture of the plot that had been unfolding under his very roof.
"Not yet," Victoria’s recorded voice answered on the player. "Leo is still too protective. We need to isolate her further. Once the new will is fully executed and the probate court signs off on the primary asset transfer, then we can arrange a... permanent solution. Just like we did with Sarah."
Click.
Leo hit the stop button. The sudden, absolute silence that rushed back into the grand salon was heavier than before.
For three long seconds, nobody moved. The only sound was the soft, rhythmic breathing of little Lily sleeping against Leo’s shoulder.
Then Leo raised his head. His eyes weren't just cold anymore; they were dead, black pits of pure, unadulterated fury. The billionaire titan, the man who routinely crushed corporate rivals without a second thought, looked at Victoria not with anger, but with the terrifying detachment of an executioner examining a condemned criminal.
"Marcus Vance," Leo whispered, the name tasting like poison on his tongue. "My chief counsel. The man I trusted with my life, my business, and my family. You and Marcus have been planning to kill my daughter."
Victoria’s theatrical facade finally shattered completely. The tears she had previously manufactured for show were replaced by real, stinging moisture born of absolute terror. She pushed herself away from the mantelpiece, her hands trembling as she took a desperate step toward him.
"Leo, please! Let me explain!" she cried, her voice cracking, losing all its polished composure. "That recording... it’s manipulated! It’s deep-fake audio generated by an AI tool! Beatrice hates me! She must have spliced together clips from old phone calls to frame me!"
"Deep-fake audio?" Leo repeated, his voice dangerously low. He stepped forward, pulling a heavy manila folder from the interior pocket of his tailored jacket and tossing it onto the mahogany coffee table between them. "Is this deep-fake too? The bank statements showing four million dollars transferred from my private philanthropic fund into an offshore shell corporation registered under Marcus’s maiden name? Are the medical supply orders for unprescribed epinephrine blockers forged as well?"
Victoria looked down at the documents spilling out of the folder, her breath catching in her throat. Every defense she had prepared, every legal trap she had laid to protect herself in the event of an audit, had been laid bare in a single, devastating stroke.
"You've been draining my accounts for eighteen months," Leo continued, closing the distance between them until he towered over her by a full head. "You've been slowly suffocating my daughter, isolating her from the staff, and erasing every memory of Sarah from this house. And all the while, you smiled in my face, shared my bed, and whispered sweet nothings about our future."
"Leo, listen to me!" Victoria shrieked, lunging forward to grab the lapel of his jacket, her manicured nails digging into the fabric. "If you ruin me, if you call the police, you destroy the Rossi name! The board of directors will tear the company apart! The stock will plummet fifty points by morning! Think of what this does to your legacy!"
"My legacy," Leo said, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper that sliced through the air like a butcher's knife, "is sleeping on my shoulder. And anyone who ever tried to harm a hair on her head is going to find out just how ruthless a father can be when he has nothing left to lose."
He reached out with his free hand, his fingers wrapping firmly around Victoria’s wrist. She let out a sharp gasp of pain as he pulled her hand away from his jacket, shoving her back against the mantelpiece with enough force to rattle the decorative porcelain vases.
"Beatrice," Leo called out without turning around.
From the shadows of the arched doorway leading to the service wing, Beatrice stepped forward. She looked pale, her hands clasped tightly in front of her apron, but her spine was straight. She had crossed the Rubicon, and there was no turning back.
"Yes, Mr. Rossi?" Beatrice answered, her voice steady.
"Call the private security team," Leo instructed, his eyes never leaving Victoria’s terrified face. "Lock down every perimeter gate, cut all external communications for the east wing, and notify federal prosecutor Thomas Sterling that I have a confession he might find interesting."
"Right away, sir," Beatrice nodded, turning briskly on her heel.

"Leo, you can't do this!" Victoria screamed, scrambling forward as Beatrice disappeared down the hall. "Marcus will retaliate! He has contingency plans! You don't know what you're—"
"I know exactly what I'm doing, Victoria," Leo interrupted, turning away from her as he carried Lily carefully toward the grand staircase. "Your nightmare is just beginning. And unlike Sarah’s accident... this time, there are no loose ends."
