Chapter 13 - THE SUNLIT HORIZON

-14
By midsummer, the construction of our new home was well underway.
The framing of the house was complete, the roof shingles were locked in place, and the bright yellow front door stood proudly against the warm July sunshine, welcoming the future with open arms.
Sarah and I spent our weekends walking through the unfinished rooms, visualizing where the furniture would go, where Lily’s bedroom would be painted her favorite shade of light blue, and where we would share quiet cups of coffee on the back patio as the sun went down.
One evening in late July, after the construction crew had packed up their tools for the day, Sarah and I sat on the subfloor of the unfinished living room, looking out the massive picture window toward the open horizon.
“It’s hard to believe we’re actually here,” Sarah murmured, resting her head gently against my shoulder. “Sometimes, when I close my eyes, I still catch myself expecting... expecting the dark.”
I wrapped my arm around her, pulling her tight against my chest, pressing a soft kiss to her crown.
“The dark is gone, Sarah,” I whispered fiercely. “You’re out in the open now. And as long as I’m breathing, nobody will ever cast a shadow over you again.”
Sarah closed her eyes, letting out a long, peaceful breath of absolute release.
Downstairs, or rather, on the ground level where solid, visible earth met the open air—with no hidden cellars, no locked doors, and no concrete dungeons—Lily came running into the frame, holding a wooden block she had found in the scrap pile.
“Look, Daddy! Look what I found! I’m building a castle!” she cheered, holding the block up high.
I smiled, standing up and extending my hand down to help Sarah to her feet.

“Let’s go help her build it,” I said softly.
We walked down the wooden stairs together into the warm summer evening, stepping out onto the solid, sunlit ground, ready to write the next beautiful chapter of our lives.
