Chapter 9 - THE VERDICT

-10

The jury deliberation lasted less than three hours.

It was late Thursday afternoon when Marcus Vance called me with the final verdict, his voice carrying the calm, victorious tone of a battle-tested litigator.

“It’s over, Ryan,” Marcus said over the phone.

I was sitting in the living room while Lily napped upstairs and Sarah read a book by the window. My heart skipped a beat. “What was the verdict?”

“Guilty on all counts,” Marcus stated clearly. “Kidnapping, false imprisonment, aggravated domestic assault, and financial fraud. The jury didn't even deliberate for a full afternoon—the evidence was simply too overwhelming.”

“And the sentencing?”

“The judge handed down multiple consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole,” Marcus replied. “Your mother was remanded directly back into federal custody and is being transferred to a maximum-security correctional facility fifty miles west of the city tonight. She will never walk free again.”

A profound, heavy weight seemed to lift off my shoulders—a final, lingering anchor of guilt and familial obligation that had weighed me down my entire life.

“Thank you, Marcus,” I said, my voice thick with emotion. “You gave us our lives back.”

“Take care of your family, Ryan,” Marcus said warmly. “You’ve all earned your peace.”

I ended the call and walked over to the window where Sarah sat looking out at the falling autumn leaves. She looked up as I approached, reading the expression on my face instantly.

“It’s over, isn't it?” she asked softly.

“It’s over,” I confirmed, pulling up a chair and sitting down beside her, taking her hands in mine. “She was convicted on all counts. Multiple life sentences. She’s going to a maximum-security facility tonight.”

Sarah closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath of pure, unadulterated release. A single tear slipped down her cheek, but this time, it wasn't a tear of trauma or fear—it was a tear of absolute freedom.

“We’re free,” she whispered.

“We’re free,” I repeated, smiling as I leaned forward and kissed her lips.
