Chapter 6 - THE ENEMY AT THE GATES

-6

The revelation hung in the air like smoke after a bomb blast. My father—the monster my mother had taught me to fear more than death itself—sat on the edge of the mattress, weeping silent, heavy tears for a family he thought he had lost a quarter-century ago. The terrifying syndicate boss had evaporated, leaving behind only a broken, haunted man who had spent half his life waging a solitary war of vengeance against ghosts.

"Mother..." I whispered, the word tasting bitter and confusing on my tongue. "She told me men with dragons were monsters. She made me promise never to let anyone see my skin, never to stay in one place, never to trust a soul."

"She was protecting you from my enemies," Dante said, his voice thick with sorrow as he finally let his hand rest gently on my knee. The warmth of his skin sent a strange, electric shock up my spine—familial blood recognizing its own across a chasm of lies and blood. "And perhaps, she was protecting you from me, too. In the old days... I wasn't a merciful man. I still am not. But you are my flesh and blood, Mara. The blood of the Alighieri dynasty flows through your veins, whether you want it to or not."

Before I could process the terrifying weight of those words, a deafening explosion ripped through the western wing of the mansion.

The entire estate shuddered violently. Glass shattered in the hallway outside our suite, followed by the rapid, stuttering pop of automatic gunfire and the shrill wail of emergency sirens.

Dr. Sterling dropped his manila folder, screaming as a chunk of plaster fell from the ceiling, narrowly missing his head.

Dante’s transformation from a grieving father back into a lethal mafia warlord happened in a fraction of a second. The sorrow vanished from his eyes, replaced by a cold, incandescent fury. He sprang to his feet, drawing a heavy, silver-engraved Beretta pistol from a concealed holster beneath his armpit with blinding speed.

"They found us," Dante snarled, his gaze locking onto the heavy oak door. "The Vanguard Syndicate. They must have tracked Dr. Sterling's encrypted lab transmission frequency."

"Vanguard?" Dr. Sterling stammered, clutching his head in sheer panic. "That's impossible! The encryption routing was routed through three Swiss proxy servers—"

"They're here!" a harsh voice shouted over the static-filled intercom box mounted on the wall near the door. It was Thomas, Dante’s head of security. "Boss, the perimeter wall on the north side has been breached by an elite assault team! They're using thermal charges on the doors! We're holding the grand staircase, but they're overwhelming our flank!"

"Fall back to the secondary bunker!" Dante barked into the intercom mic. "Protect the eastern corridor at all costs! If a single one of those bastards reaches the third floor, I want every man of mine executing them on sight!"

"Copy that, Boss!"

Dante turned sharply toward me. The gunfire outside was getting closer, punctuated by the heavy, rhythmic thuds of men kicking in reinforced doors down the hallway.

"Mara, take Leo," Dante commanded, thrusting a small, compact tactical pistol into my hand.

I stared down at the cold black metal in sheer horror. "I... I don't know how to shoot! I'm a waitress!"

"You're an Alighieri!" Dante shouted over the deafening roar of a secondary explosion just two doors down. He grabbed my shoulders, his dark eyes burning with fierce intensity. "Listen to me very carefully. If anyone opens this door who isn't me or Thomas, you pull that trigger until the slide locks back. Do you understand me? Protect my grandson with your life!"

Before I could answer, Dante spun around and kicked open the bedroom's private balcony doors, stepping out into the cold night air to assess the courtyard below while bullets began to chew through the outer drywall of our suite.

"Stay low!" I screamed, pulling little Leo out of the bassinet and diving behind the heavy oak frame of the king-sized bed just as a burst of automatic gunfire shredded the bedroom windows, raining glass across the floor like glittering diamonds.
