Chapter 15 - THE QUEEN OF THE SHADOWS

One year later.
The rain was falling softly outside the sprawling wrought-iron gates of the Alighieri estate, but inside the grand ballroom, the atmosphere was warm, vibrant, and alive with music. Tonight was a celebration—not just of a new year, but of the formal transition of power.
The most powerful syndicate leaders, political figures, and international allies from across the country had gathered in the grand hall. They stood in hushed, respectful silence as the heavy double doors at the end of the mahogany staircase swung open.
I descended the grand staircase wearing a floor-length, backless emerald-green silk gown that caught the chandelier light with every step. My dark hair was swept up into an elegant chignon, and resting against my left collarbone was a delicate diamond brooch shaped like a coiling dragon holding a sapphire rose—the official crest of the Alighieri dynasty.
Beside me walked Dante. He looked proud, his posture unyielding, his scarred face alight with a rare, genuine smile. And toddling between us, holding both of our hands with an enthusiastic, giggling grip, was a one-year-old boy dressed in a miniature black tuxedo, his bright eyes taking in the glittering crowd with the exact same serious, calculating curiosity his father and grandfather possessed.
Leo.
As we reached the floor of the grand ballroom, the crowd parted smoothly, bowing their heads in unison—not out of fear, though fear was certainly there, but out of absolute, unyielding respect.
Dante stepped up to the raised dais at the front of the room, taking the microphone from an attendant. The room fell instantly silent.
"Tonight, we close a chapter of blood and shadows," Dante’s deep, resonant voice echoed off the marble pillars. "For decades, this city believed the Alighieri dynasty was broken, fractured by betrayal and loss. They were wrong. Blood survives. Blood remembers. And blood reclaims its throne."
He turned, extending his hand toward me as I stood holding Leo in the center of the stage.
"Tonight, I formally step down as the head of the syndicate," Dante announced, his eyes sweeping across the stunned, breathless crowd. "And I hand the reins of power to the true heir of this house—my daughter, Mara Alighieri."
Applause erupted like rolling thunder—deafening, reverent, and absolute. The music swelled through the grand hall, mixing with laughter, clinking crystal glasses, and the whispered awe of a city bowing to its new queen.
I looked out across the sea of powerful faces, remembering the terrified waitress who used to balance sea bass plates on her arm while praying just to survive the shift. That girl was gone, burned away in the ashes of Ristorante Bellagio.

In her place stood the daughter of the dragon, holding the future of the underworld in the palm of her hand.
I smiled, tightened my grip on my son's tiny hand, and stepped forward to claim my kingdom.
