Chapter 9 - The Reckoning in the Hallway-9

Daniel scrambled to his feet, rubbing his raw, swollen wrists, while Vanessa collapsed against his shoulder, sobbing uncontrollably.

"Mom... I... I don't understand," Daniel stammered, his voice shaking. "Who are these people? What is happening to our house?"

"It's not our house, Daniel," I said sharply, cutting him off with an icy gaze that made him flinch. "It never was. And right now, we have about thirty seconds before his partner comes upstairs."

As if on cue, heavy footsteps thundered up the wooden staircase from the foyer. Ruth Henderson appeared at the end of the hallway, a small black handgun raised in her hand.

"Nobody move!" Ruth barked, her eyes cold as flint. "Drop the knife, Margaret."

I stood my ground, placing myself directly between the armed woman and my son.

"You're too late, Ruth," I said, keeping my voice terrifyingly calm. "The police have already been alerted to the break-in at Blackwood Cabin. The federal agents who have been investigating Miller’s estate for thirty years know exactly what Claire is doing."

Ruth hesitated, her eyes flickering with a moment of doubt. "You're bluffing."

"Am I?" I pulled Thomas's brass key from my pocket and held it up in the sunlight streaming through the hallway window. "This key opens the vault in the cellar. But the documents inside don't belong to Claire. They've already been digitised and sent to the State Attorney General's office."

It was a complete bluff, but my tone was so absolute, so devoid of fear, that Ruth’s gun hand dropped an inch.

In that fraction of a second, Daniel reacted. He lunged forward, tackling Ruth around the waist and slamming her against the hallway wall. The gun clattered across the hardwood floor.

I kicked the firearm down the stairwell, where it crashed onto the marble entryway below.

"Go! Out the back!" I screamed.

We ran down the rear service stairs, bursting through the kitchen and out into the rainy back garden. We sprinted through the woods toward my hidden sedan.

Vanessa was hyperventilating, struggling to keep up in her high heels, but Daniel kept his arm tightly wrapped around her waist, pulling her forward.

We reached my car. I unlocked the doors, and they tumbled into the back seat, gasping for air.

I slammed the car into drive, tore out of the cul-de-sac, and merged onto the main highway just as two police cruisers—called by alert neighbors who had heard the commotion—sirens blaring, rushed past us toward the lake house.
