Chapter 14 - The Fall of Blackwood-14

"You idiot!" Claire screamed, aiming her gun directly at Daniel’s chest.
"FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS!"
Brilliant white flashbangs exploded through the glass windows of the timber mill, shattering the darkness. Flashlights crisscrossed the air as dozens of heavily armed FBI SWAT operators flooded the floor from the upper scaffolding.
"DOWN ON THE GROUND! NOW!"
Claire’s guards dropped their weapons immediately, hands raised. Claire spun around, her eyes wild with panic, attempting to sprint toward the rear exit of the mill.
Daniel lunged forward, grabbing her coat and throwing her to the ground. The gun skidded away across the dirt floor. SWAT officers swarmed her instantly, pinning her arms behind her back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists.
"Clear! Clear!" the radio chatter crackled.
Agent Vance turned to me in the surveillance van with a grim smile. "We got her, Margaret. It's over."
I stepped out of the van and walked into the illuminated mill. Daniel was standing near the center floor, wiping sweat from his forehead. When he saw me, he took a deep breath and walked straight toward me.
He didn't say anything. He simply pulled me into a tight, desperate embrace, burying his face in my shoulder like he used to when he was seven years old.
"I'm sorry, Mom," he whispered, his chest heaving with deep, painful sobs. "I'm so sorry for everything. For the cruise... for the house... for being a terrible son."
I held him tight, feeling the rain fall gently through the broken roof of the mill onto our shoulders.
"You were lost, Daniel," I murmured softly into his hair. "But you found your way back."
Behind us, Claire Morrison was led past in handcuffs. She glared at me with pure venom.
"You think you won, Margaret?" Claire spat. "You lost your house! You lost your past! You have nothing left!"
May you like
I stopped, turned, and looked at Claire Morrison with quiet, unshakeable dignity.
"I didn't lose my past, Claire," I said calmly. "I freed myself from it. And my future is entirely my own."
