The descent into the sub-basement of the Moretti estate felt less like walking into a residential utility area and more like entering the classified vaults of a high-security corporate facility. The stairs were constructed of reinforced concrete, descending deep beneath the manicured lawns and marble foundations of the mansion. As I moved downward, the ambient temperature dropped significantly, the air taking on a damp, metallic chill that tasted faintly of ozone and old dust.

I flicked on a small tactical flashlight I had grabbed from the kitchen utility drawer, sweeping the beam across the gray cinder-block walls. Water pipes ran overhead like a tangled skeletal system, intertwined with thick bundles of black electrical cabling and automated ductwork that branched out toward every wing of the mansion.

According to the estate layout Vincent had described, the master HVAC control room and the primary filtration manifold were located at the far end of the eastern sub-level corridor, behind a heavy steel fire door fitted with an electronic keypad lock.

My heart hammered against my ribs, each footstep echoing softly against the concrete floor. The sheer scale of the Moretti property meant that anyone down here could easily scream for help and never be heard over the deafening roar of the massive industrial blowers.

When I reached the end of the corridor, the heavy steel door loomed out of the darkness. I pulled the heavy master key ring from my pocket, matching the physical override key to the mechanical deadbolt beneath the electronic keypad.

The deadbolt turned smoothly. I pulled the heavy door open, stepping inside the master control room.

The space was dominated by an array of towering, computer-managed climate control units, humming with rhythmic power. Banks of digital readouts blinked green and blue across the steel panels, displaying temperature, humidity, and airflow velocity for every zone in the mansion.

I swept my flashlight beam across the wall until I found the specific junction box labeled ZONE 4 - SECOND FLOOR EAST WING (CHILDREN'S QUARTERS).

My breath caught in my throat.

Branching off the main trunk line of Zone 4 was a secondary, unmapped PVC pipe—a custom-rigged auxiliary injection line that did not belong on the original architectural blueprints. It bypassed the standard HEPA filtration system entirely, looping through a small, locked metal housing unit mounted directly onto the wall beside the main blower.

I stepped closer, shining my light directly at the housing unit. A small digital pump was wired into the estate’s automated electrical grid, programmed to pulse every four hours—precisely during the deep-sleep cycles when Lucas and Leo’s bodies would be most vulnerable to chemical absorption.

Connected to the pump was a clear, industrial-grade plastic reservoir tank. Inside the tank sloshed a thick, viscous amber liquid that emitted the exact same faint, sweet, artificial floral odor I had smelled outside the boys' bedrooms upstairs.

“Found you,” I whispered to myself, pulling the sterile glass specimen jar and the latex gloves from my coat pocket.

I snapped the gloves onto my hands and examined the housing unit's access panel. It wasn't locked with a high-tech biometric scanner; it was secured by a simple mechanical latch that required a standard Allen wrench. Fortunately, the estate’s maintenance kit hung on a pegboard near the door, and I had spotted a set of hex keys earlier.

I sprinted back to the pegboard, grabbed the appropriate Allen wrench, and rushed back to the auxiliary injection unit. With quick, practiced precision, I loosened the four screws securing the access panel, lifting it away with a soft metallic clink.

Inside the unit sat a computerized dosing module, hooked up to a cellular transmitter box. The transmitter was beaming real-time physiological data—heart rate, respiratory rate, and blood oxygen levels—directly to an external IP address registered outside the estate.

Dr. Blake wasn't just poisoning the boys; he was monitoring the efficacy of the neurotoxin in real-time, calibrating the dosage to ensure they remained chronically incapacitated without crossing the threshold into outright organ failure that would require emergency hospitalization outside his control. It was a slow-motion medical kidnapping executed through environmental sabotage.

I pulled the rubber-sealed glass jar toward the reservoir, carefully unscrewing the intake valve to draw a five-milliliter sample of the viscous amber liquid. As the golden-brown compound trickled into the glass, the chemical scent grew sharper, burning the inside of my nose with its synthetic sweetness.

Clack.

The sound of footsteps echoed sharply at the top of the concrete stairs leading down into the sub-basement.

I froze, the glass jar half-full in my gloved hand.

“Who’s down there?” a sharp, reedy voice called out—a voice that sent a cold shudder of dread straight down my spine.

Mrs. Harper.

Panic surged through my veins, but I forced my breathing to remain level, shoving the specimen jar into my deep coat pocket and slamming the access panel shut just as the beam of a heavy flashlight swept across the dark corridor outside the open steel door.

“I know someone unlocked the maintenance door,” Mrs. Harper’s voice drew closer, trembling with a mixture of anger and panic. “Show yourself right now! You have no business being in the master utility vault!”

There was nowhere to hide in the open control room. The massive climate units offered zero concealment, and the concrete walls left me completely exposed if she stepped across the threshold.

I gripped the Allen wrench tightly in my right hand, preparing for a confrontation, as the sound of sensible heels clicked rapidly across the concrete floor, drawing closer by the second.
