Chapter 13 - THE WINTER SOLSTICE

-13
The turning of the seasons brought the breathtaking, pristine beauty of the winter solstice to the rolling hills of Connecticut. The Moretti estate stood like a magnificent stone fortress against a canvas of deep, powdery snow, its tall windows glowing with the warm, welcoming light of holiday cheer.
Inside, the grand foyer was dominated by an enormous, twelve-foot balsam fir tree decorated with vintage glass ornaments, sparkling white lights, and handmade paper snowflakes crafted by Lucas and Leo during their arts and crafts sessions.
On the evening of the winter solstice, we hosted a quiet, intimate gathering—not of billionaire business associates or political power brokers, but of the people who truly mattered: Mrs. Harper, Marcus and his security detail, and our close-knit circle of neighborhood friends who had stood by us during the darkest days of the investigation.
The dining room table groaned under the weight of a magnificent roasted turkey, honey-glazed ham, cranberry sauce, and a towering display of holiday desserts prepared by the estate’s newly expanded culinary staff.
As the guests laughed and shared stories around the table, I sat near the head, looking across at Vincent, who was currently listening with rapt attention as Leo excitedly explained the intricate engineering mechanics of a snow fort he and his brother had built in the backyard.
Mrs. Harper caught my eye from across the table, raising her glass of sparkling cider in a silent, affectionate toast. I smiled and raised my glass in return, sharing a quiet, unspoken understanding of how far we had all traveled together.
After dinner, as the guests moved into the grand living room to enjoy coffee by the crackling stone fireplace, Vincent slipped his hand into mine and gently led me away from the crowd toward the quiet, moonlit conservatory.
The glass-walled room was cool and serene, illuminated only by the pale, ethereal glow of the winter moon casting shadows across the indoor citrus trees and the shimmering koi pond.
Vincent stopped near the center of the conservatory, turning to face me. He reached into the inner pocket of his dark velvet blazer, pulling out a small, elegant velvet box.
My breath caught slightly in my throat. My heart skipped a beat as I looked from the box up into his slate-gray eyes, which were shining with a profound, undeniable intensity.
“Claire,” Vincent began, his voice dropping into a low, resonant register that vibrated through the quiet glass room. “When I asked you to be our nanny, I was looking for someone to heal my sons. I had no idea that you were going to heal my entire world.”
He opened the velvet box. Inside rested a stunning, custom-designed ring featuring a central diamond flanked by two smaller, brilliant stones—representing the three lives that had been inextricably bound together under this roof.
“I don't ever want to imagine my life, my home, or my future without you in it,” Vincent continued, dropping gracefully onto one knee on the polished marble floor. “You brought the light back when everything was wrapped in poison. Will you marry me, Claire? Will you be my wife, and a permanent mother to my boys?”
Tears welled in my eyes, hot and crystal clear, as I looked down at the man who had torn down his walls, risked his empire, and trusted me with his most precious treasures.
“Yes, Vincent,” I whispered, my voice breaking slightly with emotion. “Yes, a million times yes.”
Vincent slid the ring onto my finger—it fit with absolute, flawless precision—before standing up and pulling me into a fierce, passionate embrace that swept me off my feet.
From the doorway of the conservatory, a sudden, synchronized gasp of delight echoed through the glass room. We turned to see Lucas, Leo, and Mrs. Harper peeking around the corner, their faces lit up with uncontainable joy.

“She said yes! Dad got the ring on!” Leo cheered, running into the conservatory and launching himself against Vincent’s legs, while Lucas scrambled to hug us both.
Vincent laughed, lifting both boys into his arms while holding me securely against his side, creating a human circle of unbreakable warmth in the middle of the winter night.
