Chapter 5 - THE TIGERS AWAKEN

-5

For three agonizing seconds, the only sound in the cavernous penthouse office was the muffled hum of the city traffic rising up through the double-paned glass windows forty floors below.

Andrew’s mouth opened and closed like a stranded fish, his eyes darting from the open steel door of the wall safe to the black cryptographic hard drive clutched tightly in my hand. The polished, arrogant corporate titan who had sneered at me across a ballroom floor just days ago had completely evaporated, replaced by a terrified, cornered man realizing his entire life's work was about to go up in smoke.

"Elena..." Andrew whispered, his voice trembling, a pathetic mixture of shock and desperate rage contorting his features. "What... what the hell are you doing in my office? How did you get past the security gates?"

"I live here, Andrew. Or at least, I used to, before you turned our home into a staging ground for municipal embezzlement and marital betrayal," I replied, my voice steady, cold, and entirely devoid of the fear he expected to see. I didn't back away from him; instead, I planted my feet firmly on the Persian rug, holding his gaze with unyielding defiance.

A dark, dangerous flush crept up Andrew's neck, washing over his face as the shock rapidly gave way to explosive fury. He took two aggressive steps toward me, his hands curling into tight fists at his sides.

"Give me that drive, Elena," Andrew ordered, his voice dropping into a low, menacing growl that he usually reserved for recalcitrant junior executives or corporate rivals. "You have no idea what you're holding. You are playing a game with live grenades, and you are going to blow us both to pieces. Hand it over right now, or I swear to God I will call the police and have you arrested for breaking and entering into my private residence."

I let out a sharp, cold laugh, sliding the hard drive securely into the deep pocket of my wool trench coat.

"Call the police, Andrew," I challenged, stepping closer to him, letting him see the absolute, unbreakable steel in my eyes. "Tell the precinct dispatcher that your pregnant wife broke into your safe to retrieve the evidence of your twenty-eight-million-dollar municipal fraud scheme. Let’s see how fast the federal grand jury issues a subpoena for your personal browser history."

Andrew flinched as if he had been physically struck. The color drained even further from his face, leaving him looking like a ghost. He realized, with sudden, terrifying clarity, that the leverage had completely shifted. He wasn't dealing with the quiet, compliant housewife who used to apologize for interrupting his business calls; he was dealing with a woman who had nothing left to lose and everything to fight for.

"You're bluffing," Andrew hissed, though his voice lacked conviction, trembling on the edge of hysteria. "You don't know how to access the encrypted files on that drive. Even if you walk out of here with it, it's useless dead weight without my master decryption key."

"Maybe," I said smoothly, stepping past him toward the office door, keeping my eyes locked on his every move to ensure he didn't lunge for me. "Or maybe my legal team already decrypted the primary cloud mirror three hours ago. Have a nice night, Andrew. I suggest you start calling your defense attorneys—you're going to need a very good one."

"Elena, wait!" Andrew shouted, lunging forward to grab my arm.

I spun away with a sharp, defensive twist, my elbow catching him squarely in the chest, pushing him back against the mahogany desk. I didn't wait to see if he recovered; I bolted out of the office, sprinted down the dimly lit hallway, and threw myself into the private elevator just as the doors began to close.

I slammed my palm against the lobby button, watching through the closing brass gap as Andrew screamed my name down the corridor, his fists pounding uselessly against the air.

The elevator dropped like a stone, rushing downward through the dark shaft. My heart hammered against my ribs like a jackhammer, the adrenaline pumping furiously through my veins. I had done it. I had breached the lions' den, secured the smoking gun, and made it out alive.

When the elevator doors chimed and slid open into the quiet, brightly lit lobby, I didn't hesitate. I pushed past the stunned young doorman, burst out through the revolving glass doors into the cold Manhattan rain, and sprinted down the avenue toward the pre-arranged extraction point where Claire Morgan’s secure town car was waiting in the shadows.
