Chapter 6 - The Empty Office

-6-

The downtown Los Angeles headquarters of Vale Industries loomed like a monolithic glass tomb against the harsh midday sun.

Adrian stood across the street on the corner of Wilshire Boulevard, leaning against a concrete parking meter. He had managed to flag down a passing taxi using his last fifty-dollar bill—the only cash he had left in the secret pocket of his travel wallet—and instructed the driver to bring him straight to the corporate tower.

He didn't have a badge anymore. His biometric access had been wiped from the security servers three hours ago.

When he walked through the revolving glass doors of the grand lobby, the security guards—men he had greeted by name for years, men whose holiday bonuses he personally signed—instantly stepped forward.

"Mr. Vale," the head security guard, a burly veteran named Miller, said with an uncomfortable twitch in his jaw. "I'm sorry, sir. You're not authorized to enter the building."

Adrian stared at him, his voice hollow. "Miller. It's me. I own this company."

"Not according to the digital access registry updated by corporate HR at 9:15 AM, sir," Miller replied, his hand resting uncomfortably near his belt. "Mrs. Vale’s executive directive is absolute. All former C-suite personnel pending internal audit are barred from the premises."

"I just need to grab my personal items from my office," Adrian pleaded, his usual arrogance completely stripped away. "My father’s signet ring. My grandfather's pocket watch. They're in my desk drawer."

"I'm sorry, Mr. Vale. HR is boxing up your personal effects right now. They'll be delivered to your legal counsel's office by tomorrow afternoon."

Before Adrian could argue further, the main bank of elevators chimed.

The crowd of lobbyists, junior executives, and board members who had been milling around the lobby instantly parted like the Red Sea.

Claire stepped out of the private executive elevator, flanked by two armed private security contractors in sleek dark suits and Arthur Sterling, the senior legal partner. She didn't look flustered, tired, or triumphant. She looked like a queen inspecting her newly conquered territory.

As she walked across the marble floor toward the exit, her eyes swept over the lobby and briefly landed on Adrian standing stranded behind the security turnstiles.

She didn't stop. She didn't slow down. Her stride remained unbroken, her gaze cutting right through him as if he were nothing more than a piece of discarded office furniture.

"Mrs. Vale," Miller barked, snapping a crisp salute as she passed him.

"Thank you, Miller," Claire said, her voice carrying clearly across the silent lobby.

She pushed through the glass revolving doors and stepped into a waiting fleet of black SUVs idling at the curb, surrounded by flashbulbs from a pack of paparazzi that seemed to have materialized out of thin air.

Adrian watched the convoy pull away into the heavy downtown traffic.

He stood there for a long, agonizing minute, the murmur of the lobby staff washing over him like cold water. The humiliation was absolute. The destruction was total. In less than twelve hours, he had gone from sitting at the top of the corporate world, feeding caviar to a mistress while his wife kept quiet at home, to a washed-up, penniless nobody locked out of his own life.

He turned around and walked back out into the blistering Los Angeles heat.

His phone—the cracked, half-dead device still resting in his pocket—vibrated once.

It wasn't a call. It wasn't a text message from Ethan.

It was a push notification from his banking app.

Your primary personal credit line has been officially closed.

Adrian stopped on the sidewalk, letting out a short, hollow laugh that sounded dangerously close to a sob. He reached into his pocket, pulled out the cracked phone, and hurled it with every ounce of strength he had left against the concrete side of the building.

The screen shattered into a million tiny, glowing fragments, scattering across the pavement like broken glass.

He had nothing left.

No money. No company. No home. No wife.

And as the reality of his total annihilation finally sank in, Adrian realized the most terrifying truth of all:

Claire wasn't done with him yet.
