Chapter 3 - The Industrial Canal Vault-3

The high-performance luxury SUV Pendelton had provided for my corporate transport tore through the dark, rain-swept industrial corridors along the Cumberland River, its tires screaming against the frozen asphalt as we raced toward the old shipping canal blocks. A blinding sheet of freezing rain battered the reinforced windshield, smearing the skeletal silhouettes of the abandoned manufacturing foundries into a shifting, featureless wasteland.

The time was 11:24 a.m. We had precisely thirty-six minutes before the financial markets closed their morning clearing sessions, executing the automatic verification script that would permanently lock the Vanguard Group's asset claims if the ledger wasn't delivered to the federal monitors.

"The location marker is centering on Storage Unit 108 inside the Ironwood Logistics Park," Pendelton shouted over the roar of the vehicle's engine and the thunder shaking the valley sky. "It’s a legacy concrete bunker built during the industrial boom of the 1970s, reinforced with heavy steel blast doors and protected by an independent power grid. Evelyn hid the physical backup server core inside that vault twelve months ago, hardwired into the building's central system network."

I sat in the passenger seat, the leather journal clutched tightly in my lap, my hands slick with sweat and the residue of the white paraffin wax block I had left behind at the office. The fury that washed over me was no longer directed at Evelyn; it was directed at the absolute, terrifying scale of my own ignorance. While I had been sitting at her kitchen counter, secretly listening to her breath and counting down the pills left in her cabinet, she had been using my digital presence as an iron shield to fight a multi-million-dollar war against the very man who had destroyed my mother’s life.

"Marcus Vance’s private security detail just breached the front perimeter gate of the logistics park, Julian!" Pendelton’s radio hot-spot crackled with a violent layer of shortwave static, the voice of his field operator frantic and short of breath. "Three black luxury sedans with masked commercial plates are blocking the north ramp! They have hydraulic breaching tools, Arthur! They’re blowing the sub-level utility doors right now!"

"We’re not taking the north ramp, Arthur," I said, a sudden, cold clarity crashing through my chest as I grabbed a heavy steel crowbar from the vehicle's rear utility chest. "Evelyn’s journal... page forty-two... it outlines the original structural blueprints of the facility. The old water filtration shafts... they route directly beneath the concrete foundations of Sector 4, ending straight inside the maintenance utility closets of Unit 108. Let’s cut the pipeline from the root."
