Chapter 10 - The Scent of Lavender-10

"Look at the screen, Thomas," I whispered, the blood from the cut above my eye dripping down my jawline onto his gloved hand. I didn't try to break his grip, and I didn't look at the gun. I allowed myself a small, cold smile that I knew would terrify him more than any scream. "Your brother’s state legislative rider... it only works if the server matrix is operating under a domestic routing code. But the drive I loaded... it didn't just contain the land deeds. It executed a pre-recorded federal injunction filed by the United States Attorney General three hours ago."
Thomas’s brow furrowed, his gaze flickering instinctively toward the terminal monitor in the corner of the room.
The screen had completely shifted. The red corporate firewalls had vanished, replaced by a massive, vibrant neon blue seal of the United States Department of Justice. A single progress bar was scrolling through millions of lines of code at an incredible velocity: FEDERAL RICO MANDATE ACTIVE. ALL CROFT SECURITY SOLUTIONS ASSETS FROZEN. LIQUIDATION PROTOCOL: 100% COMPLETE.
A second later, the high-pitched wail of a secondary convoy of sirens cut through the dark rain outside. It wasn't the distant, high-pitched scream of the local county police; it was the deep, rhythmic roar of a dozen massive federal tactical vehicles tearing through the pine forest.
The heavy privacy hedges outside were flattened as a fleet of black SUVs with the letters FBI emblazoned across their side panels flooded the courtyard, their high-intensity searchlights cutting through the gray rain like the hand of God.
Special Agent Harris, the lead director for the federal Civil Rights and Financial Exploitation Division, stepped through the shattered front doorway, her service weapon raised and rock-steady, her gold badge shimmering in the flashing light.
"Thomas Croft! Put the weapon on the ground and step away from the sheriff!" Harris bellowed through her tactical megaphone, her voice carrying an absolute, inescapable federal authority that stripped away any remaining pretense of political immunity. "Your brother, Senator Julian Croft, was taken into custody at the capital fifteen minutes ago for international racketeering and civil rights violations. You are fully surrounded."
Thomas’s face went entirely white, the skin around his jaw trembling with a sudden, primal terror as he realized the machine he thought made him a king had dissolved into nothingness in the span of thirty seconds. Slowly, deliberately, his fingers slipped from the trigger guard, and the compact pistol clattered heavily onto the wet floorboards.
Marcus rushed forward, slamming Thomas down onto the concrete near the fireplace, securing his wrists in heavy steel handcuffs as the FBI tactical units flooded the room, clearing the remaining operators.

Agent Harris walked over to my position, helping me push myself up from the stone hearth. She looked at Emma, who was now sitting up on her gurney, her hazel eyes bright and clear, her tiny arms wrapped securely around her wool blanket.
"You did it, Robert," Agent Harris said gently, a small, proud smile touching her eyes. "You didn't just break the lock on your porch. You broke the entire corrupt foundation of this county."
