Chapter 9 - THE CHAPEL UNDER ST. AGNES

-9

Federal agents reached St. Agnes before the demolition crew.

Barely.

The building had been empty for years.

Broken windows.

Dust.

Old surgical wing sealed.

Chapel intact.

I was not allowed inside during the search.

Good.

For once I agreed with being excluded.

I waited at the truth house.

Alessandro with me.

Liam pacing.

At 4:12 p.m., Agent Torres called.

“We found something.”

My heart pounded.

“What?”

“A concealed wall compartment.”

Inside:

Three ledgers.

Cassette tapes.

Microfilm.

And a handwritten notebook belonging to Lorenzo Vitali.

Not the Harvest Book?

One ledger had a black cover.

No title.

Pages of patient codes.

Payments.

Doctors.

Police.

Funeral homes.

Tissue companies.

That was it.

The operational heart of Orpheus.

The Harvest Book.

My mother had been right.

The case changed overnight.

Dr. Conrad Vale was arrested before dawn.

Not for organ theft murder charges immediately.

For conspiracy.

Healthcare fraud.

Records falsification.

Obstruction.

Bribery.

More could follow.

Vittorio Vitali was detained later that morning after federal agents searched his homes and offices.

Chicago exploded.

News helicopters.

Stock volatility.

Foundation board resignations.

Hospital reviews.

Alessandro did not go to headquarters.

He stayed with me until I told him to go.

“You need to handle your company.”

“I need to make sure you’re safe.”

“Federal agents are outside.”

He hesitated.

“Go.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

There.

He left.

Choice respected.

The Harvest Book documented more than twenty years.

Not every entry criminal.

Some legitimate.

But dozens showed consent irregularities.

Payments to Vale.

Marcelli.

Brennan.

Other officers.

Hospital administrators.

Vittorio.

And early Lorenzo approvals.

Alessandro’s father was not absolved.

He had signed payments during the first years.

Then stopped.

Then secretly funded investigations.

Both.

Again.

One notebook entry from Lorenzo made Alessandro cry.

November 3, 1998.

Alessandro alive.

Used graft supplied through Vittorio network.

Later learned donor family objected.

I have benefited from the thing I should destroy.

That sentence became public eventually.

Not through leak.

Alessandro chose to release portions through counsel after victims were notified.

Then:

I told myself exposing it would harm Alessandro.

Truth: I was afraid exposure would prove I had signed what I did not understand.

There.

Shame.

Reputation.

Responsibility.

Then:

Every month I wait, Vittorio gains another month.

Lorenzo knew.

He waited anyway.

Years.

That was his legacy.

Not hero.

Not villain.

A powerful man who woke up late and then moved too carefully.

I understood why Alessandro feared becoming him.

The most horrifying item in the chapel was not the ledger.

It was a box of consent forms.

Blank.

Pre-signed witness lines.

Photocopied family signatures.

Templates.

The infrastructure of theft.

My mother’s notes appeared on several.

Red circles.

Question marks.

One sticky note:

THIS WOMAN SAID NO TO ME THREE TIMES.

Patient:

Maria Alvarez.

Date.

Recovered tissue anyway.

Maria’s daughter was found years later.

She had no idea.

Families began coming forward.

The story stopped belonging to me.

That mattered.

I was one daughter among many relatives whose decisions had been erased.

Pregnant.

Yes.

Connected to Alessandro.

Yes.

But not central to every victim.

Media wanted me to become face of scandal.

I refused.

One interview only, later.

Not now.

Dr. Vale initially denied.

Then agents played my mother’s recording.

His voice.

Threats.

His lawyer asked for negotiations.

Vittorio denied everything more aggressively.

He blamed Vale.

Lorenzo.

Dead contractors.

Even my father.

He claimed Daniel extorted the family.

The Harvest Book contradicted him.

Then one entry made Alessandro go silent.

D.H. PAYMENT OFFER - REFUSED.

My father.

Vale had offered him money.

He refused.

Then:

R.H. PRESSURE THROUGH DAUGHTER?

Rebecca Hale.

Pressure through daughter.

Me.

They had considered using me before the crash.

My parents knew.

That explained urgency.

Then another note:

CARTER MOVES GIRL IF NECESSARY.

Marcus had already planned my escape.

The people protecting me were late.

But not absent.

That softened something.

Then Liam discovered his father’s name in the Harvest Book.

M.C.

Payments.

Same amounts.

But description:

COUNTER-INTEL / LORENZO.

Vale had documented Marcus as hostile.

Not bought.

Paid by Lorenzo to expose.

Liam sat down.

“Dad wasn’t dirty.”

“No.”

I touched his shoulder.

“He was secretive.”

“Still mad?”

“Yes.”

He laughed through tears.

“Fair.”

Brennan’s name appeared differently.

BRENNAN - COOPERATIVE.

Payments.

Cash.

Favor.

He had betrayed his partner.

My parents.

Then tried to bury it.

Federal prosecutors prepared charges related to the crash.

Potential felony murder theories were discussed publicly by journalists.

I stopped reading.

The law would decide.

I already knew what happened.

My mother called my name while men searched for evidence instead of helping.

That was enough horror.

Then pregnancy complicated things again.

At eleven weeks, I had bleeding.

Not much.

Enough to terrify me.

Dr. Chen instructed me to go to emergency care.

The nearest hospital with her admitting privileges was Northwestern.

Alessandro wanted to come.

I said yes.

He arrived before we did somehow.

Billionaire logistics.

I almost mocked him.

Then another cramp hit.

No jokes.

Ultrasound.

Waiting.

Silence.

Finally heartbeat.

Strong.

I cried.

Alessandro cried quietly beside me.

Liam waited outside.

Dr. Chen said:

“Small subchorionic hemorrhage. Often resolves. We monitor.”

Not caused by stress necessarily.

Not anyone’s fault.

Still, I felt fragile.

As we left, a nurse handed me a sealed envelope.

“This was left for you at reception.”

No return name.

My blood went cold.

Security checked.

No immediate threat.

Inside:

A photograph of me at age nine.

School playground.

I had never seen it.

On the back:

YOUR MOTHER WASN’T THE ONLY HALE WHO KNEW ABOUT ORPHEUS.

Below:

ASK LIAM WHO TOOK THIS.

I looked at Liam.

His face went white.

Not confused.

Recognizing.

“Who?”

I whispered.

He closed his eyes.

“My father.”

“Why was he photographing me?”

“He wasn’t.”

“Then who?”

Liam looked at Alessandro.

Then me.

“There was another man assigned to watch you.”

Someone Lorenzo placed around me.

Not Liam.

Not Marcus.

Another protector.

May you like

Or watcher.

And according to Liam, he had disappeared the same week my parents died.
