Chapter 10 - THE WINTER GALA

-10-

The night of the Vance Capital Winter Gala arrived with a bitter, freezing December wind that whipped snow flurries across the illuminated plaza of Vance Capital Tower. But inside the multi-story ground-floor lobby, the atmosphere was a breathtaking masterpiece of radiant warmth, luxury, and absolute power.

The entire space had been transformed into a pristine, modern palace. Thousands of white crystal pendants cascaded from the vaulted ceiling, catching the warm amber glow of recessed lighting and casting brilliant, prismatic reflections across the polished white marble floors. A live string orchestra played classical compositions from a raised mezzanine, their music mingling with the polite, hushed murmurs of the world's most powerful billionaires, tech moguls, and political leaders.

There were no reality TV stars, no social media influencers, and no desperate fashion bloggers trying to sneak past security. Every single guest walking the red carpet represented genuine, unassailable global influence.

At the center of the grand reception hall, standing beside a towering display of white roses, was Ethan Vance.

He wore a custom-tailored, midnight-blue tuxedo that fit his broad shoulders with razor-sharp precision. His silver-threaded black hair was neatly combed, and his sharp, intelligent gray eyes surveyed the room with the calm, effortless dominance of a man who owned the very ground he stood upon.

"Ethan," a voice called out smoothly as a prominent European tech investor and his wife approached to pay their respects. "An absolute triumph. Transforming your headquarters into a gala venue—brilliant move. The security alone makes Davos look like a backyard barbecue."

Ethan shook the investor’s hand, offering a polite, practiced smile. "Thank you, Viktor. We believe in creating an environment where our partners can collaborate and celebrate in absolute security and peace."

As the investor moved away to mingle, Marcus Vance materialized smoothly at Ethan’s elbow, holding a secure encrypted tablet.

"Everything is running at one hundred percent capacity, Boss," Marcus whispered, keeping his voice low beneath the swell of the string orchestra. "Federal security details report zero anomalies outside the perimeter. The live global broadcast to our international branch offices is currently logging over twelve million concurrent enterprise viewers."

"Excellent," Ethan murmured, taking a crystal flute of sparkling mineral water from a passing waiter’s tray.

Across the room, the doors of the private executive elevators chimed softly.

A murmur rippled through the nearest group of billionaires as a distinguished elderly statesman—a former U.S. Treasury Secretary—walked over to join Ethan, eager to discuss the upcoming global monetary policy summit hosted by Vance Capital.

Ethan turned to greet him, his posture remaining perfectly upright, his demeanor a masterclass in quiet, unshakeable authority.

Downstairs, miles away in the freezing, windowless North Jersey diner, a tiny television mounted in the corner of the greasy kitchen was quietly broadcasting the live corporate feed of the gala.

Chloe Davenport stood by the dishwashing station, wiping down a greasy tray with a gray, tattered rag, her eyes glued to the small screen.

On the television, Ethan Vance looked like an untouchable deity, smiling faintly as he shook hands with the most powerful people on the planet.

A sharp pang of bitter, hollow regret twisted deep inside Chloe’s chest, but she couldn't look away. She had traded a billion-dollar empire, a life of endless luxury, and a man who would have given her the world—all for a three-second joke, a handful of digital likes, and the fleeting, worthless applause of strangers on the internet.

The cook yelled an obscenity from the flat-top grill, demanding she hurry up with the dishes.

Chloe snapped back to reality, blinked away her tears, and went back to scrubbing grease, knowing with absolute, crushing certainty that she was nothing more than a ghost haunting the margins of a world she had thrown away with her own hands.
