Chapter 15 - The Unbroken Circle

-15-
Three days later, we returned to Evanston just as the spring wildflowers were beginning to bloom across our front yard, painting the neighborhood in brilliant splashes of purple, yellow, and white.
Unpacking was quick and efficient, a well-rehearsed routine between two people who understood how to build a peaceful, orderly life. As I placed Sophie's acoustic guitar back in its stand in her bedroom and smoothed down the quilt on her bed, my phone rang with a brisk, professional chime.
I picked it up from my pocket. It was Marcus Vance.
"Evelyn," his voice came through the speaker, crisp and upbeat. "I hope your Door County trip was everything you needed."
"It was perfect, Marcus. Thank you," I replied, walking back down the hallway toward my home office. "Is everything alright at the firm?"
"Better than alright," he laughed softly. "The Department of Justice just officially closed out the final asset forfeiture audit for Vance Holdings. All remaining subsidiary accounts have been permanently liquidated, and the federal receivership is officially dissolved. As far as the government is concerned, the chapter is closed, sealed, and archived forever."
I paused at the doorway of my home office, looking across the room at the sleek dual-monitor setup glowing softly in the afternoon light.
"Thank you for keeping me updated, Marcus," I said sincerely. "It means a lot."
"Anytime, Evelyn. Enjoy your weekend. You earned every bit of it."
The line clicked dead. I slipped the phone into my pocket, walked over to my desk, and sat down in my comfortable ergonomic chair.
On the corner of the desk sat a small, framed photograph taken just two days ago on the rocky shores of Door County. It showed Sophie and me laughing, wrapped in our wool blankets, with the vast, beautiful expanse of Green Bay stretching out behind us under a brilliant blue sky.
No blood. No marble floors. No crystal chandeliers or glittering ballrooms filled with wolves in tailored suits.
Just two people who had walked through the fire, outsmarted the system, and built an unbreakable circle of safety, trust, and unconditional love.

I reached out, tapped the keyboard to wake the primary display, and opened a new terminal window to begin drafting code for our next major municipal security project.
The system was secure. The perimeter was locked. And the future was entirely ours to write.
