Chapter 13 - The SEC Investigation-13

Wednesday morning arrived with a gray, unrelenting drizzle that matched the mood inside the executive conference room of Mercer Tower.

Damien sat at the center of the mahogany table, looking over a series of diagnostic reports sent over by Dr. Harrison confirming that Julian’s first phlebotomy treatment had been a complete success and his liver enzymes were already stabilizing. A quiet sense of relief had settled into his chest—a feeling that, for the first time in his life, he was actually winning the battles that mattered.

The heavy boardroom door burst open without warning.

Sarah rushed in, her face pale, holding a thick sheaf of official government documents. Behind her walked two men in dark charcoal suits carrying federal badges.

Damien stood up immediately, his corporate instincts flaring back to life with razor-sharp precision.

"Mr. Damien Mercer?" the lead federal agent asked, flashing his credentials. "Special Agent Vance—no relation to your former CFO. We have a federal warrant for a preliminary compliance audit and asset freeze regarding unauthorized international wire transfers originating from Mercer Enterprises' secondary reserves last month."

The boardroom fell into absolute silence. Several junior executives gasped.

Damien stared at the agents, his brow furrowing in profound confusion. "An asset freeze? On what grounds? Every international transfer executed under my administration has been fully vetted and cleared by corporate compliance."

The agent stepped forward and dropped the thick stack of documents onto the mahogany table right in front of Damien. "Last month, your subsidiary holding company in Zurich executed a three-million-dollar acquisition of an unlisted offshore tech firm in the Cayman Islands. The transaction bypassed standard multi-tier board authorization protocols—a direct violation of federal securities regulations."

Damien flipped open the first page of the warrant. His eyes scanned the wire routing numbers, the corporate seal, and the digital signature authorizing the transaction.

The signature at the bottom read: Damien Mercer, Chief Executive Officer.

Except Damien had never signed it.

He stared at the signature, the stark reality of the handwriting hitting him like a physical blow. It was an exact, flawless forgery—executed with the precise mechanical strokes that only someone who had spent decades studying his personal administrative habits could manage.

Someone from inside the inner circle. Someone who had access to his secure digital signing keys before he locked down the executive accounts.

My mother, Damien thought, the name tasting like poison in his mouth.

"Mr. Mercer?" the federal agent prompted, his tone strictly professional. "We require your immediate cooperation, access to your digital servers, and a freeze on all discretionary corporate accounts until this audit is complete."

If the federal government froze Mercer Enterprises' discretionary accounts, the upcoming quarterly merger would collapse, the stock price would plummet by forty percent, and the company his grandfather built—the empire he had fought so hard to reclaim from his mother's toxic legacy—would implode within forty-eight hours.

It was a trap of staggering brilliance and malicious intent.

"Agent," Damien said, his voice dropping into a cold, lethal register that made even the federal investigator pause. "I am fully cooperating with this audit. But I want it noted for the record that this transaction was executed using forged digital credentials by an unauthorized party who no longer holds any operational authority within this company."

"You can present your defense to the federal magistrate, Mr. Mercer," the agent replied coldly. "Right now, your accounts are frozen."

As the federal agents began pulling out their laptops and setting up their auditing equipment across the boardroom table, Damien pulled out his personal phone. He bypassed his corporate lines and dialed a private number he had hoped he would never have to use again.

It rang twice before a smooth, chillingly calm voice answered on the other end.

"I wondered how long it would take you to call, Damien," Eleanor Mercer’s voice purred softly through the speaker.

"You forged my signature," Damien said, his voice shaking with a fury so cold it burned. "You leaked a fraudulent SEC compliance violation to destroy my company just because I stripped you of your power."

"I didn't destroy your company, darling," Eleanor replied smoothly, sounding as though she were discussing the weather over tea. "I merely demonstrated that a boy playing house with a bookstore archivist has no business running a four-billion-dollar empire. You wanted to cut ties with the family legacy? Fine. Let's see how your precious legacy survives federal bankruptcy."

"Listen to me very carefully, Mother," Damien said, leaning against the edge of the conference table, his eyes locked on the federal agents working across the room. "You think you've cornered me. You think you can use my company as leverage to tear my family apart."

"And what are you going to do, Damien?" she challenged, a dark amusement threading through her words. "Arrest me? Prove it was me who forged the signature? Good luck with that while the SEC is tearing your balance sheets to shreds."

Damien let out a slow, terrifyingly calm breath.

"You forgot one detail, Mother," he whispered into the phone. "When I audited Julian Vance's embezzlement scheme last week, I didn't just find his offshore accounts. I found the master compliance server logs—logs that prove every single fraudulent subsidiary transaction executed over the last decade was routed directly through your personal residential terminal, signed off with your biometric encryption key."

The line went dead silent. The haughty, triumphant breathing on the other end stopped instantly.

"I haven't handed those logs to the SEC yet," Damien continued softly. "Because I was hoping you'd eventually realize that a mother doesn't destroy her own blood out of spite. But since you forced my hand..."

"Damien, wait—" Eleanor's voice cracked, the icy composure finally shattering into genuine panic.

"The federal marshals are already on their way to your penthouse with a warrant for securities fraud, corporate sabotage, and elder racketeering," Damien said. "Enjoy the view from the balcony while you can, Mother. Because the next time you see the outside world, it will be through the bars of a federal penitentiary."

May you like

He hung up the phone, tossed it onto the mahogany table, and turned to face the federal agents.

"Gentlemen," Damien said, straightening his tie and standing tall. "If you're looking for the author of that fraudulent wire transfer, I have a second address you need to investigate immediately."
