Chapter 2 - The Traitor in the Light-2

The silence that collapsed back over the grand ballroom as the hotel’s head of security initialized the master root terminal playback loop was a heavy, suffocating thing, thick with the scent of spilled champagne, floral table arrangements, and the sudden, structural collapse of the Cross family's multi-million-dollar philanthropic lie.
The high-definition projection monitors mounted along the marble pillars—the screens Preston had configured to display a nostalgic slideshow of his family real estate acquisitions—flickered violently twice, before rendering the unedited, crystal-clear cloud storage footage from the reception perimeter.
The camera tracking metrics rendered the timeline with an absolute, undeniable mathematical precision. At exactly 3:58 p.m., while the wedding party was preparing for the initial toast, the footage showed Preston approaching the coat rack pylon where Sophie’s little denim jacket was hanging. But the recording didn't just expose him sliding his expensive phone terminal into her pocket.
It exposed a secondary shadow moving with clinical speed right beside him, a person who had quietly unlatched the jacket’s interior utility seam to extract the master cryptographic hardware token my late grandfather had left me inside his Navy lockbox.
The camera zoomed closer, the image clearing under our forensic enhancement script to unmask the face of the collaborator.
It was my younger sister, Kendra.
She was currently kneeling right beside me on the ballroom rug, her face a mask of fake, tear-streaked maternal comfort as she pressed a white linen napkin against Sophie’s bleeding forehead, her three-year-old daughter Nora resting on her hip like a prop in a staged child custody scam. Kendra’s hand froze instantly against my daughter’s skin, her face turning a sudden, paper-white translucent hue as her fingers tensed against the fabric, her manicured nails digging into the cloth as she realized her connection to the forgery had just been broadcasted to every investor in the room.

"Kendra?" the word tore out of my throat, a freezing rasp stripped of any domestic submission.
"Mallerie, please! It’s an administrative misunderstanding!" Kendra shrieked, her voice cracking into a high-pitched, desperate wail of pure primitive panic as she scrambled backward away from my boots, her daughter Nora peeking over her shoulder toward the screens like she was watching a television show. "Preston told me the shipping infrastructure grants were being held under a national security fraud warrant because of your corporate database audits! He said if we didn't return the data tokens to the Nicosia handlers before midnight... our family’s entire real estate portfolio would be permanently liquidated by the state insurance commissioner!"
