"We did it together, Grandma," I whispered, my tears finally spilling over my cheeks, a genuine smile of pure, unadulterated peace touching my lips as I looked out over the quiet green valley below.

But on the fourth morning, while Charlotte was down by the river bank adjusting the gears on her sketch pads, a sleek, white federal luxury sedan pulled up to the gate, its engine idling quietly in the shade of a massive oak tree.
Special Agent Harris stepped out of the driver's seat, carrying a single, small silver lockbox under her arm, her face solemn but calm.

"But he built a secondary maternal override partition into the code. It responds exclusively to the genetic markers of his biological child and the mother of his bloodline heir."
