Chapter 3 - The Forensic Audit-3

The high-performance luxury SUV my firm had provided for my corporate transport tore through the blinding sheets of the December storm, its heavy tires screaming against the frozen asphalt of Route 1 as we pushed toward the downtown administrative annex in Stamford. The gray, churning waters of the Long Island Sound looked like an unyielding sheet of slate beneath the dark sky, the coastal wind howling through the pine buffers with a low, threatening roar that amplified the tension pounding inside my skull.

The time was 11:24 p.m. We had precisely thirty-six minutes before the international financial clearing houses closed their nightly processing loops in New York, executing the automatic verification script that would permanently lock the forged riverfront infrastructure deeds inside the Cypriot offshore vaults.

I sat in the passenger seat, my tablet terminal resting flat across my knees, my fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard as Marcus Hale continued to feed me the decrypted network logs from our downtown office. In the back row booth sat Helen and her daughter Grace, wrapped in thick wool travel blankets I had quietly extracted from the linen vault before we cleared the mansion's main gates. I had refused to leave them behind at the estate; if Martin Pierce’s handlers realized the data loop had been fractured, the property management office would be dark before the local police precinct could even route a cruiser to the gate line.

"The transponder codes are centering on the sub-basement disaster recovery center beneath the Vance Tower, Andrew," Marcus Hale’s voice crackled through my wireless earpiece, thick with an adrenaline-fueled alertness. "Martin Pierce just swiped his master keycard at the loading dock elevator block ten minutes ago. He’s carrying the original carbon-fiber document box—the one containing the physical hardware signature tokens he used to clone your biometric authorization profiles."

"He’s trying to launch the zero-fill wipe script, Marcus," I said, my teeth clenching so hard the muscles beneath my jaw pulsed violently against my shirt collar. "He knows the moment the grand jury signs the indictments tomorrow morning, his personal banking history becomes public record. He has to incinerate the master drives to protect Celeste's connection to the Nicosia shell accounts."

"The tactical units are already positioning their perimeters along the north ramp, Andrew," Agent Harris said, swerving the heavy SUV through a flooded construction barrier near the shipping canal locks. She killed the vehicle's headlights, drifting the black humvee into the shadow of an abandoned manufacturing foundry. "But we can't execute a standard keycard breach at the front gate without triggering a localized network alert. If the system detects a forced entry, the automated thermal self-destruct charges on the server racks will ignite within ten seconds, vaporizing the evidence from the root."
