Chapter 5 - The Titan’s Ultimatum

Word Count: 1052
The storm clouds gathering over Lake Michigan mirrored the heavy, suffocating tension inside the executive suite of the Solmere Hotel.
It was 2:00 AM. The federal agents had cleared out the sub-basement servers, carting away hard drives and encrypted ledgers in heavy aluminum cases. Marcus and Arthur Vance had been transported to a federal holding facility, their political immunity shattered by undeniable financial corruption. The board members who had aided them were currently sequestered in luxury suites on the twelfth floor, trembling under armed guard while awaiting morning interrogation.
In the penthouse boardroom, only Charlotte Vale remained, working tirelessly by the light of a single desk lamp.
Spread before her were the unredacted financial audits of Titan Global Logistics, cross-referenced with the sub-basement data logs she had extracted from the mainframe. The picture emerging was far darker than she had initially imagined. Titan Global wasn't just trying to acquire Solmere for its real estate portfolio; they were weaponizing the hotel chain's international concierge networks to funnel unregistered capital between Chicago, Zurich, and Hong Kong.
Knock. Knock.
A soft, hesitant rap echoed against the heavy mahogany doors.
“Enter,” Charlotte commanded without looking up from her spreadsheets.
The door creaked open, and Detective Miller stepped into the room, holding a sleek, secure satellite phone that flashed a pulsing amber light.
“Ms. Vale, I apologize for interrupting at this hour, but you need to see this,” Miller said, walking over to place the phone gently on the rosewood table. “We just intercepted an encrypted satellite transmission routed directly to the hotel’s master switchboard from an offshore private yacht operating in international waters.”
Charlotte stopped typing, looking up at the flashing amber light. “Who is the sender?”
“Alistair Vance,” Miller replied grimly. “The CEO of Titan Global Logistics himself. He bypassed local cell towers entirely to avoid interception. He wants to speak with you—personally.”
Charlotte stared at the satellite phone for a long moment. Alistair Vance knew his domestic proxies, the Vance brothers, had been arrested. He knew his money-laundering pipeline had been exposed. Calling her directly wasn't a desperate plea; it was a power move from an apex predator who refused to accept defeat.
She reached out, picked up the secure handset, and pressed the speaker button.
“Alistair Vance,” Charlotte spoke, her voice steady, cold, and carrying the full weight of her executive authority. “You’re speaking on a recorded federal line. Make it quick.”
A low, smooth chuckle echoed through the speaker—a rich, aristocratic laugh that sounded entirely too calm for a man whose multi-billion-dollar criminal enterprise had just imploded.
“Charlotte Vale,” Alistair’s velvet voice filled the quiet boardroom. “Or should I call you the midnight burglar of Sub-Level Three? I must applaud you. You dismantled in twelve hours what Marcus and Arthur spent two years carefully constructing. Your grandfather would be immensely proud.”
“Save your flattery, Alistair,” Charlotte cut him off sharply. “Your co-conspirators are in federal custody, your illegal ledger files are sitting on a federal prosecutor's desk, and your corporate front company is about to be liquidated by the SEC. You’ve lost.”
A sharp, dangerous edge sliced through Alistair’s smooth tone.
“Lost? My dear girl, you are looking at a single tree while the entire forest is burning down around you,” Alistair purred. “Do you honestly believe that Marcus and Arthur were the architects of this acquisition? They were merely instruments. Titan Global holds controlling debt covenants on forty percent of Solmere’s physical real estate mortgages across North America. Without my signature, your precious hotel chain defaults on its primary bond payments by Friday noon.”
Charlotte’s eyes narrowed instantly. She pulled up the mortgage covenant file on her laptop, her fingers flying across the keys. Her heart skipped a beat.
Alistair wasn't bluffing. Buried deep within the legacy restructuring files—hidden behind encrypted shell companies the Vance brothers had illegally authorized last year—were multi-million-dollar balloon payments tied directly to Titan Global’s affiliate lenders. If those notes weren't refinanced or settled by Friday at noon, Titan Global could legally foreclose on half the Solmere properties overnight.
“You trapped us in a secondary debt web,” Charlotte whispered, her jaw tightening.
“Precisely,” Alistair replied, triumph dripping from every syllable. “So here is my ultimatum, Charlotte. You drop all federal charges against Marcus and Arthur. You execute a quiet, amicable corporate merger transferring fifty-one percent voting control of Solmere Global to Titan Global by dawn. In exchange... I’ll forgive the mortgage debt, and I’ll let you keep your penthouse suite.”
The boardroom fell into a suffocating silence. Detective Miller watched Charlotte anxiously, waiting to see if the young heir would crumble under the crushing weight of corporate blackmail.
Charlotte looked down at the Solmere Master Trustee Ring glittering on her finger. She thought of her grandfather, who had built the empire with honesty and grit. She thought of her mother, whose sudden death was inextricably linked to these ruthless corporate monsters.
A cold, fearless smile slowly spread across Charlotte’s face.
“Alistair,” Charlotte spoke into the satellite handset, her voice dropping into a register so lethal it made Miller take an involuntary step back. “You think debt covenants and mortgage threats scare me?”
“They should,” Alistair warned. “By Friday noon, you’ll be bankrupt.”
“By Friday noon,” Charlotte countered, enunciating every single word with razor-sharp precision, “I won't just have your debt covenants destroyed. I’ll have you standing in front of an international criminal tribunal answering for federal racketeering. Do your worst, Alistair. Because I’m coming for everything you own.”
She slammed the disconnect button down hard, cutting off the billionaire’s arrogant laughter mid-sentence.

She looked up at Detective Miller, her hazel eyes blazing with an unstoppable fire.
“Miller,” Charlotte commanded sharply. “Contact Interpol and the Swiss banking commission. We’re going to audit Titan Global’s offshore accounts. And we’re going to do it before sunrise.”
