Chapter 4 - The Port of Entry-4

The high-performance luxury SUV my firm had provided for our tactical operations convoy tore through the dark, rain-swept industrial corridors along the Utah logistical transit district, its heavy tires screaming against the frozen asphalt as we pushed toward the downtown data annex. A blinding sheet of freezing alpine sleet battered the reinforced windshield in a relentless, concussive tempo, turning the skeletal silhouettes of the abandoned manufacturing foundries into a shifting, featureless wasteland of gray water.

The time was 11:24 p.m. We had precisely thirty-six minutes before the international financial clearing houses closed their nightly processing loops in New York, executing the automatic verification script that would permanently lock the asset transfers inside the state registry system.

I sat in the middle row cabin, my arm resting securely over the back of Harper’s small shoulder as she drifted into an exhausted sleep against my side, her favorite yellow blanket neatly folded over her wrapped chin dressing, her small fingers still clutching her handmade holiday drawings. Beside me on the mahogany console counter sat my personal laptop terminal, its encrypted interface rendering a rapid, scrolling cascade of emerald-green financial transactions.

"The transponder codes are centering on Storage Unit 108 inside the Ironwood Maritime Annex, Tessa," Marcus Hale’s voice crackled through my wireless earpiece, his tone carrying the deep pride of a long-awaited corporate redemption. "The Merrick family syndicate didn't just target your shipping terminals; they used your entire marriage infrastructure as a localized testing grid to monitor the private financial vulnerabilities of every business owner in the county. If we can't neutralize the physical server pylon before midnight... the Nicosia handlers get total ownership of our private authentication tokens."

We didn't wait for a local precinct escort or a state police dispatcher. I launched my large frame out into the freezing storm, my heavy leather winter boots splashing violently through the deep pools of oil-stained drainage water as I sprinted toward the narrow utility access door marked HVAC Maintenance Block B—the subterranean facility that housed the central server core for the Merrick holding company.
