Chapter 6 - The Digital Guillotine

-6-
By noon, the news had broken across every major financial network and mainstream media outlet in the country.
The headline flashing in bold crimson banners across CNN, Bloomberg, and local news stations read: “Sterling Logistics CEO Richard Sterling Arrested by Federal Task Force; Multi-Million Dollar Fraud and Estate Embezzlement Ring Exposed.”
Below the main ticker, a secondary headline sent shockwaves through the digital world: “Viral Influencer Vanessa Sterling’s Accounts Frozen Amid Federal Investigation into Coordinated Smear Campaign and Judicial Bribery.”
The internet—which had spent the past eleven months relentlessly tearing me apart based on Vanessa’s tearful, highly edited livestream videos—underwent a violent, instantaneous reversal. The comment sections of Vanessa’s social media channels, previously flooded with vitriol and death threats directed at me, exploded with outrage directed squarely at my family. The mob had found a new target, and they were merciless.
Inside my temporary command office at the federal field downtown, I sat in front of a massive multi-monitor setup, reviewing the live metrics of the digital fallout. The servers my task force had seized from the mansion were currently being parsed by our cyber-forensics unit, revealing even deeper layers of corruption than we had initially anticipated.
The door clicked open, and Adrian Vale walked in carrying two steaming cups of black coffee. He set one down on the edge of my desk before leaning back against the glass partition, watching the data streams scroll across the screens.
“The attorney general’s office just called,” Adrian said quietly, his voice a steady, comforting anchor amidst the digital storm. “Your father’s defense counsel tried to file an emergency motion for bail, but the federal judge rejected it outright due to extreme flight risk. They’re being held without bond at the federal detention center.”
I took a sip of the hot coffee, letting the caffeine cut through the lingering exhaustion of the past twenty-four hours. “And Vanessa?”
“Her brand sponsors have dropped her en masse,” Adrian said with a faint, dry smirk. “Her main agency terminated her contract within twenty minutes of the news broadcast. Her comment sections have been disabled across every platform because the backlash was so severe people were doxxing her home address.”
“She lived for the spotlight,” I murmured, watching a frozen screenshot of Vanessa’s tearful livestream appear on a news ticker. “Now she’s going to get all the attention she ever wanted, just behind twenty-four-hour surveillance cameras and concrete walls.”
“You played this brilliantly, Elena,” Adrian said, turning his gaze toward me, his expression softening. “Eleven months of total silence. Most people would have fought back immediately, leaked documents to the press, or started a public shouting match. You let them hang themselves with their own rope.”
“My mother taught me that silence meant weakness,” I replied, looking out the reinforced window toward the city skyline bathed in the harsh midday light. “She spent my whole life telling me that if you don't scream the loudest, nobody listens. But she never understood the fundamental rule of financial crimes: the louder a liar screams, the faster their paper trail unravels.”
The desk phone rang with a sharp, insistent chime.
I reached out and pressed the speaker button. “Vale here.”
“Commander,” the voice of the lead cyber-forensics investigator crackled through the small speaker. “We’ve finished decrypting the hidden partition on Richard Sterling’s personal hard drive. You’re going to want to see this immediately.”
I sat up straight, instantly shifting back into operational mode. “What is it?”
“It’s not just shell companies and municipal bribes,” the investigator said, his voice dropping lower. “We found a secondary archive containing communications between your father and an unknown party regarding your grandmother’s medical files. They didn't just forge the trust after she died, Commander. They altered her medication chart while she was recovering in the hospital.”
The room seemed to drop ten degrees. Adrian straightened up instantly from the glass partition, his eyes locking onto mine with sudden, razor-sharp intensity.

The investigation was no longer just about financial fraud and estate embezzlement.
It had just crossed the line into premeditated murder.
