CHAPTER 5: The Truth Buried Beneath Millions

CHAPTER 5: The Truth Buried Beneath Millions

Nathan's black Aston Martin roared through the iron gates of Caldwell Manor so fast that the security guards barely had time to raise the barriers.

His phone remained pressed to his ear.

"Emma... please answer."

Voicemail.

Again.

Nothing.

His instincts, the same instincts that had built a multibillion-dollar empire, screamed that every second mattered.

Meanwhile, three blocks away, Emma clutched Lily's hand as they hurried home.

She could still hear the motorcycle's engine.

Still feel the rush of wind that had missed her daughter by inches.

"Mommy..."

Lily looked up.

"Why were you scared?"

Emma forced a smile.

"I just want to get home."

A black SUV rolled slowly behind them.

Too slowly.

Emma noticed it in the reflection of a shop window.

It had followed them for nearly two blocks.

Her heartbeat quickened.

She crossed the street.

The SUV crossed too.

She turned into a crowded market.

So did the SUV.

This was no coincidence.

Emma scooped Lily into her arms and ran.

Inside the SUV, a large man wearing sunglasses spoke into a headset.

"They're moving."

A cold female voice answered.

"Don't lose them."

"Should we take the child now?"

"No."

A pause.

"It has to look accidental."

The call ended.

Nathan reached the neighborhood just as Emma disappeared into the busy outdoor market.

His eyes scanned desperately.

Then—

He saw the black SUV.

It wasn't parked.

It was stalking.

Nathan slammed his brakes.

Without thinking, he jumped out into traffic.

"Emma!"

She turned.

Relief flooded her face.

"Mr. Caldwell!"

Before either could move farther—

The SUV accelerated.

Straight toward them.

People screamed.

Nathan reacted instinctively.

He shoved Emma sideways with one arm and grabbed Lily with the other.

The vehicle missed them by less than a foot before crashing into a fruit stand.

Wood exploded.

Oranges rolled across the pavement.

The driver leaped from the SUV and ran.

Nathan handed Lily back to Emma.

"Stay here."

He sprinted after the man.

The chase lasted less than two minutes.

The driver was fast.

Nathan was furious.

That made him faster.

He tackled the man in an alley, sending both crashing into dumpsters.

The stranger reached for something inside his jacket.

Nathan pinned his wrist.

A phone.

Not a weapon.

The screen lit up.

One unread message.

Finish the job. Payment doubles if the child disappears.

Nathan's blood froze.

Police sirens echoed nearby.

The attacker twisted free just long enough to bite down on a hidden capsule.

Within seconds, foam appeared at the corners of his mouth.

Paramedics arrived too late.

He was dead.

Nathan stared silently.

Professional.

Prepared.

Someone had expected failure.

Someone had planned for silence.

That evening Detective Alan Pierce spread photographs across Nathan's office.

"This wasn't random."

Nathan nodded.

"I know."

Alan pointed at the SUV.

"Fake plates."

"The driver's fingerprints?"

"Removed."

"The phone?"

"Wiped remotely thirty seconds after he died."

Nathan remained quiet.

Alan looked directly at him.

"Whoever is behind this has resources."

Nathan slowly reached into his desk.

He removed Meredith's confidential Brooks file.

Alan's eyes narrowed.

"Where did you get this?"

Nathan answered.

"My fiancée."

Alan opened the folder.

His expression darkened with every page.

Finally he whispered,

"My God..."

Nathan leaned forward.

"What?"

Alan tapped one document.

"This signature."

Nathan looked.

Victor Hale.

Alan exhaled heavily.

"I've spent fifteen years trying to catch him."

"You know him?"

"He never commits crimes."

"He arranges people who do."

Nathan's jaw tightened.

"And Meredith?"

Alan hesitated.

"I don't know whether she's giving orders..."

"...or following them."

Emma and Lily were moved into the mansion's private guest wing under twenty-four-hour security.

Emma objected immediately.

"This isn't necessary."

Nathan looked at her calmly.

"Someone tried to kill your daughter."

"I won't risk that happening again."

Emma lowered her eyes.

"I don't want to become your responsibility."

Nathan answered softly,

"You never were."

She looked confused.

"What do you mean?"

"I think someone brought you into my life for a reason."

Neither of them noticed James quietly leaving the room.

The old butler had tears in his eyes.

Because Nathan sounded exactly like his late father.

Late that night Meredith returned home.

She expected sympathy.

Instead she found Nathan sitting alone in the library.

No lights except the fireplace.

The framed drawing still hung proudly above it.

"You've been avoiding me," she said.

Nathan didn't answer.

She sat opposite him.

"Nate..."

Still silence.

Finally he asked,

"Did you know someone tried to kill Emma and Lily today?"

Meredith widened her eyes perfectly.

"What?"

"They're alive."

"Oh my God..."

She covered her mouth.

"How terrible."

Nathan watched every movement.

Every blink.

Every breath.

Nothing.

No genuine shock.

No confusion.

Only performance.

He quietly slid the confidential file across the table.

Meredith's face lost all color.

For one second.

Only one.

Then the mask returned.

"Where did you get that?"

May you like

Nathan answered with chilling calm.

"I asked the questions first."
