Chapter 7 - The Plaza Gala

-7-
The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel in Midtown Manhattan glittered beneath cascading crystal chandeliers, reflecting the opulence of New York’s untouchable elite. Gowns of silk and velvet rustled against polished marble floors as influential politicians, corporate magnates, and high-ranking municipal officials mingled over flutes of champagne and caviar. At the center of the room, standing beside a towering ice sculpture, was Senator Robert Sterling, pressing the flesh of wealthy donors and laughing heartily at a joke delivered by a prominent real-estate developer. To the casual observer, it was a standard evening of high-society networking and political fundraising.
To Alessandro Moretti, it was a gathering of ghosts and executioners.
The heavy mahogany double doors at the entrance of the grand ballroom swung open silently. All conversation in the immediate vicinity died away as Alessandro walked into the room, flanked by Victor Hale and two armed operatives disguised as security detail. Alessandro wore a tailored midnight-blue tuxedo, his broad shoulders and commanding posture cutting through the crowd like a razor blade. He didn't smile, he didn't nod to acquaintances, and he certainly didn't wait to be announced.
He simply walked straight toward the center of the room, his dark eyes locked entirely on Senator Sterling.
As the realization of who had just entered the room rippled through the gathering, murmurs erupted among the guests. High-profile executives began backing away toward the edges of the ballroom, sensing the suffocating aura of impending violence that trailed behind the feared crime boss like a shadow.
Senator Sterling stopped laughing mid-sentence, his face turning pale as he watched Alessandro approach. He instinctively reached for his highball glass, his fingers trembling slightly against the crystal rim.
"A-Alessandro," Sterling stammered, attempting to force a nervous, diplomatic smile as he extended a hand. "I didn't realize the Moretti family was on the guest list tonight. What an unexpected—"
Alessandro completely ignored the extended hand. He stopped inches away from the senator, towering over him with a terrifying, frozen stillness.
"Cut the pleasantries, Robert," Alessandro said, his voice deceptively quiet, carrying across the hushed ballroom with crystal clarity. "We both know you didn't invite me. And we both know why you're sweating through your tailored silk tie right now."
Sterling swallowed hard, his eyes darting frantically toward the hotel security guards stationed near the exits, but none of them dared to step forward against the master of the Moretti syndicate. "I—I don't know what you're talking about, Alessandro. This is a private charity gala. If you have grievances regarding maritime legislation, my office is open during regular business hours—"
"Your office is currently being wiped of every digital file, offshore wire transfer, and compromising email you ever exchanged with Julian Vance," Alessandro interrupted smoothly, pulling a sleek tablet from his jacket pocket and resting it on the edge of the ice sculpture between them.
The screen flickered to life, displaying a scrolling bank statement and a signed memorandum of understanding linking Senator Sterling’s personal campaign accounts directly to Apex Marine Engineering—the exact shell company that funded the hydraulic cutter used to sever Isabella’s brake lines three years ago.
Gasps echoed through the surrounding crowd. Several high-ranking officials began stepping backward into the shadows, desperately wishing the marble floor would open up and swallow them whole.
"Project Janus," Alessandro whispered, leaning in close so only the senator could hear. "You signed off on the highway safety report that covered up the assassination of my wife and daughter. You traded their lives for campaign donations and a seat at Vance’s corporate table."
"That—that's a forgery!" Sterling hissed, panic breaking through his polished exterior as sweat beaded on his forehead. "You have no proof! The police report was finalized and closed by the state!"
"The state doesn't matter anymore, Robert," Alessandro replied, his voice chillingly absolute. "Because right now, every news outlet, federal prosecutor, and investigative journalist in New York is receiving an encrypted copy of this exact dossier. Your career, your freedom, and your legacy are officially over."
Before Sterling could utter another word of defense, the heavy double doors at the opposite end of the ballroom burst open with a resounding crash.
A dozen heavily armed operatives wearing tactical gear emblazoned with the Aegis Group insignia swarmed into the room, their assault rifles raised, clearing a path through the terrified guests who scattered in absolute panic. At the head of the tactical unit walked Julian Vance himself.
Vance was a tall, silver-haired man in his late fifties, impeccably groomed, wearing a tailored charcoal suit that radiated understated power. His cold, calculating blue eyes swept over the chaotic ballroom before locking directly onto Alessandro.
"Well, well, well," Vance said, his voice smooth and utterly devoid of fear as he strolled toward the center of the room, flanked by his armed guards. "I must admit, Alessandro, I expected you to remain caging yourself inside your desolate mansion until old age finally claimed you. Coming out to play in public? That’s a bold tactical error."
Alessandro turned away from the trembling senator, his gaze shifting to the man who had ordered the destruction of his family. The air between them crackled with lethal electricity—a collision of two titans representing opposing forces of a brutal, hidden war.
"You should have stayed in your penthouse, Julian," Alessandro said quietly, his hand resting casually near his holster. "You killed my wife. You killed my daughter. And you thought you could hide behind shell companies, corrupt politicians, and private mercenaries forever."
Vance offered a cold, mocking smile, spreading his hands in a gesture of exaggerated innocence. "Business is business, my dear Alessandro. The Moretti dynasty had controlled the New York shipping lanes for far too long. A monopoly breeds stagnation, and someone had to clear the board. As for your wife and child... collateral damage in a corporate restructuring. Truly unfortunate, but entirely necessary."
The moment the words left Vance’s mouth, the illusion of civilization shattered completely. The ballroom grew deathly silent, save for the faint hum of the ice sculpture melting beneath the harsh lights.
"You called them collateral damage," Alessandro whispered, his voice vibrating with a lethal, controlled fury that made even Victor Hale tense his grip on his weapon.
May you like
"They were casualties of progress," Vance replied smoothly, nodding to his lead mercenary to raise his weapon. "And unfortunately, Alessandro, your little crusade ends right here, tonight. Clean up this mess, boys."
The Aegis operatives snapped their rifle barrels forward, but before they could squeeze the trigger, the entire lighting grid of the Plaza Hotel flickered violently and plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
