Chapter 20: The Midnight Rush

Pregnancy with Evelyn was an exercise in organized chaos. She approached it with the same fierce, meticulous planning she applied to her career.
Until the baby decided to ignore the schedule entirely.
It was 2:15 A.M., three weeks before Evelyn’s actual due date.
I woke up to the feeling of Evelyn’s nails digging sharply into my forearm.
"Marcus," she breathed, her voice tight with pain.
I snapped awake, immediately shifting into crisis mode. "Is it time? Are you okay?"
"My water just broke," she gasped as another contraction hit her. "And it's happening fast. We need to go. Now."

I didn't panic. I moved with military precision.
I grabbed the pre-packed hospital bag, threw on a pair of jeans, and rushed down the hall to wake Chloe.
"Kiddo, grab your shoes. It's time," I said.
Chloe didn't complain about the hour.
She leaped out of bed, grabbing her own small bag she had packed weeks ago.
The drive to the hospital was a blur of dark streets and flashing streetlights.
I held Evelyn’s hand across the center console, squeezing it through every contraction, whispering constant, steady reassurances.
Chloe sat in the back, leaning forward to rub Evelyn’s shoulder.
"Breathe, Mom. You're doing great," Chloe encouraged, sounding remarkably like a tiny coach.

We weren't a fragmented family falling apart under pressure.
We were a deeply synchronized unit. We moved together, breathed together, and faced the unknown together.
