Chapter 9 - The Federal Override

-9-
The heavy oak front door clicked shut behind the federal agents, sealing the tense silence inside the foyer. Brandon strode into the living room with an air of arrogant entitlement, tossing his jacket over the back of the sofa as if he hadn't spent the night sleeping on a concrete bench in a holding cell.
Special Agent Cole and Detective Miller remained standing near the entryway, their body language stiff and guarded, while Brandon turned to face Margaret with a sneer.
"Where is Emily?" Brandon demanded, crossing his arms. "And don't bother lying. I know she's under guard at St. Jude's. My lawyer is already filing emergency custody papers to grant me temporary guardianship of Grace while Emily 'recovers from her psychological episode.'"
Margaret didn't flinch. She stood tall beside the grandfather clock, her hands resting calmly at her sides. "Emily is resting, Brandon. And our granddaughter is safe where you will never, ever be able to touch her."
"We'll see about that," Brandon scoffed, turning to Special Agent Cole. "Agent Cole, tell her. Under federal protection protocols, as her legal husband—"
"Mr. Vance," Cole interrupted, his voice completely devoid of warmth, "our orders are strictly limited to securing the operational assets of this estate and transferring custody of any legacy hardware to the federal task force. We are not here to settle your domestic disputes."
Brandon waved a dismissive hand. "Fine, fine. Do whatever paperwork you need. But let's get down to business. Arthur's private office is down the hall. That's where the primary server is housed. Once we mirror the hard drives and transfer the shipping port deeds to the federal receiver, my immunity agreement is fully validated, right?"
Cole nodded curtly. "Proceed to the office. We'll observe."
Margaret watched them walk down the hallway toward Arthur’s sanctuary. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird, but her face remained an impenetrable mask of ice. They thought they had won. They thought federal jurisdiction, political corruption, and legal loopholes could erase a murder attempt and rewrite a family's history.
They didn't know Arthur Vance.
As Brandon pushed open the office door and flicked on the overhead light, he stopped dead in his tracks.
The computer monitor on the mahogany desk was no longer displaying Arthur's journal. Instead, the screen was pitch black, dominated by a single, pulsing red text box flashing in a continuous loop:
WARNING: UNAUTHORIZED FEDERAL OVERRIDE DETECTED. INITIATING PROTOCOL ARCHIMEDES.
Brandon frowned, turning to Special Agent Cole. "What is that? Did you trigger a secondary firewall?"
Cole stepped into the room, his eyes narrowing as he read the code on the screen. "No. That's not a standard federal firewall. That's a deep-level kernel trap."
Before Cole could reach for his radio, the computer tower emitted a sharp, high-pitched double-beep. The internal cooling fans whined to a deafening pitch, and every single light in the house flickered and died, plunging the office into sudden, absolute darkness.
In the next instant, the emergency backup generator kicked in with a heavy thud from the garage. The computer screen flared back to life, but the red warning text was gone.
Instead, the monitor was playing a live, streaming video feed.
It wasn't a recording. It was a live feed from the federal courthouse in downtown Manhattan, broadcasting directly into Arthur's office.
On the screen, federal marshals were currently storming the office of the United States Attorney—the very prosecutor who had just signed Brandon’s release papers thirty minutes ago. Agents were seizing filing cabinets, downloading encrypted hard drives, and slapping handcuffs on the chief prosecutor himself as cameras flashed from local news crews gathered outside.
A synthetic, computerized voice echoed from the computer's desktop speakers, bouncing off the wood-paneled walls:
“Jurisdiction transferred. Federal immunity revoked. All connected proxy nodes have been isolated and tagged for immediate asset forfeiture.”
Brandon’s face drained of all color. He staggered backward, his hands flying up to grip his head. "No... no, that's impossible! We bought the prosecutor! We had the sign-off!"
Special Agent Cole whipped around, drawing his sidearm in a fraction of a second, aiming it directly at Brandon’s chest. "Mr. Vance, you are under arrest by order of the Department of Justice Special Investigations Unit. Do not move."
Brandon spun toward the doorway, desperate to run, but stopped short.
Standing in the doorway, blocking the only exit, was Margaret. In her hand, she held the small, matte-black flash drive Arthur had left behind—the physical master key that hadn't been plugged into the computer to steal data, but to activate the final dead-man's switch her husband had built five years ago.

Margaret looked at Brandon, her voice as cold and absolute as a winter storm.
"You forgot the first rule of working with Arthur Vance, Brandon," Margaret whispered, stepping aside as federal agents swarmed past her to tackle her son-in-law to the floor. "My husband didn't just build security systems for corporations. He built them for justice."
