Chapter 35: Walking Toward the Dawn

The story that had begun in a bruised and bloodied apartment in the city, that had twisted through the corridors of political power and across international borders, finally reached its true conclusion on a crisp, golden morning in May.

Leo was turning four, and we celebrated his birthday with a small party in the orchard. The apple trees were in full bloom, their pink and white petals drifting down like warm snow in the gentle sea breeze. He blew out his candles with a look of pure, concentrated determination, surrounded by people who loved him for exactly who he was.

Later, after the guests had gone and Leo was fast asleep, exhausted from the excitement, Mara and I walked down to the rocky shore below the farmhouse. The sun was beginning to set, casting a long, golden path across the water that looked like a road made of pure light.

I pulled my old police badge out of my pocket. I had kept it all this time, a relic of a past identity that I had been reluctant to completely discard. I looked at the tarnished silver, the engraved numbers that had once defined my authority in the world.

"Are you ready?" Mara asked, watching me.

"I've been ready for a long time," I replied.

I drew my arm back and threw the badge far out into the ocean. It caught the last rays of the sun as it spun through the air, then disappeared with a tiny, clean splash into the deep blue water. The sea swallowed it whole, erasing the final physical link to the violence and corruption that had defined our early years.

We turned our backs on the water and walked back up the path toward the farmhouse, where the lights were warm and welcoming in the twilight. We had been tested by the darkest corners of the human heart, we had walked through the fire, and we had come out the other side entirely whole. The horizon was ours, and for the first time, we weren't looking back. We were walking toward the dawn.
