Chapter 4 - THE MASTER OF THE PUPPETS

The heavy oak doors of the master study remained locked from the inside, but the sound of shattering glass and heavy furniture being overturned echoed down the second-floor gallery. Richard Howard stood in the center of his private sanctuary, his Swiss-made Rolex shattered against the mahogany desk, his face flushed a dangerous, mottled crimson.
He had flown in from Zurich six hours ahead of schedule, dodging the private media circus by slipping through the subterranean delivery bay, only to find his home turned into a federal crime scene, his mistress in a holding cell, and his mother sequestered in the drawing room like a deposed queen.
Now, Richard stood face-to-face with his wife.
Elena sat calmly in the high-backed leather armchair behind the desk—his desk—her legs crossed, her hands resting peacefully over her swollen stomach. She didn't look like a terrified victim or a desperate housewife begging for scraps of affection. She looked like an executive holding the resignation letter of a failing subordinate.
"Are you completely out of your mind?" Richard roared, slamming both hands down on the polished wood surface. He leaned over, his veins bulging at his temples. "You arrested Vanessa? You dragged federal agents into my home? Do you have any idea what this does to the Howard Group’s stock valuation? The board is already calling my cell phone in a panic!"
Elena didn't flinch. She slowly raised her eyes to meet his, her gaze as cold and dead as a winter lake. "Your stock valuation, Richard? That’s your primary concern? Not the fact that the woman you installed in my guest wing attempted to murder your unborn child?"
"Don't be melodramatic!" Richard barked, waving a dismissive hand as if swatting away an annoying fly. "Vanessa is high-strung, yes. She made a foolish mistake in the heat of an argument. But she is an invaluable asset to our European logistics division! She was helping me secure the Frankfurt merger! And you—you orchestrated a premeditated sting operation against my own employee?"
"Your employee," Elena repeated, the word dripping with venom. She reached into her cardigan pocket and pulled out a thick manila envelope, tossing it carelessly onto the desk so it slid right against Richard’s knuckles. "Is that what you call the woman who has been sharing your bed in Zurich every time you claimed to be reviewing tax shelters?"
Richard’s breath hitched. The furious color on his face instantly drained, replaced by a sudden, sickly pallor. He stared down at the envelope, his fingers twitching.
"What... what is this?" he whispered, his voice losing its thunderous roar.
"Open it, Richard," Elena invited softly. "It’s a comprehensive dossier. Photographs from the Dolder Grand in Zurich. Joint credit card statements showing luxury suites booked under corporate shell companies. Flight manifests proving that Vanessa didn't just advise your European logistics division—she shared your hotel pillow while telling me over FaceTime that she was working late at the New York office."
Richard slowly reached out, his hand trembling as he lifted the flap of the envelope. He pulled out a stack of glossy 8x10 photographs. There he was—smiling, relaxed, his arm wrapped around Vanessa’s bare waist on a private balcony overlooking Lake Zurich. There were receipts, bank transfers, and legal documents proving that Richard had not only funded Vanessa’s lavish lifestyle in Manhattan, but had quietly transferred twenty percent of the Howard Group’s primary voting stock into a clandestine overseas trust bearing Vanessa’s legal name.
"You... you hacked my private server," Richard choked out, looking up at his wife as if he were seeing a demon for the first time.
"I didn't have to hack anything, Richard," Elena replied, leaning back into the leather chair. "You were always remarkably sloppy when you thought nobody was watching. You left your corporate laptop unlocked on the kitchen island every single night for three years. You assumed I was too dull, too preoccupied with domestic chores, and too grateful for your last name to ever look beneath the hood."
Richard staggered backward, his hip catching the edge of the bookshelf. The great Richard Howard—the ruthless titan of Wall Street who had crushed competitors and manipulated municipal governments—was suddenly reduced to a trembling, cornered boy.
"Elena, listen to me," Richard began, his tone shifting instantly from rage to desperate, oily persuasion. He took a hesitant step forward, holding his hands out in a placating gesture. "We can fix this. We can drop the charges against Vanessa quietly through our legal contacts. I can restructure the overseas trust—we can put the shares in your name, exactly as you wanted. We have a child coming, Elena. We can't blow up our family over a... over a temporary distraction."
Elena looked at him, and for a fleeting second, a profound wave of pity washed over her. Not for him, but for herself—for the naive young woman who had believed his promises eight years ago.
"A temporary distraction," Elena repeated, her voice steady and absolute. "Richard, when Vanessa pushed me down those stairs, she didn't just attempt to murder my child. She signed your professional death warrant."
"What are you talking about?" Richard demanded, panic flaring in his eyes once more.
The heavy oak doors of the study swung open without a knock. Detective Ruiz stepped into the room, flanked by two federal marshals in dark windbreakers. In Ruiz’s hand was an arrest warrant stamped with the seal of the United States District Court.
"Richard Howard," Detective Ruiz announced, stepping up to the desk. "You are under arrest for securities fraud, corporate embezzlement, and conspiracy to obstruct a federal investigation."
Richard spun around, his voice pitching up into a shriek of absolute denial. "On whose authority? You can't touch me! I am Richard Howard!"

Elena stood up slowly from the leather armchair, smoothing down her cardigan. She looked down at her husband with a cold, terrifying smile.
"On my authority, Richard," Elena said quietly. "As the majority voting shareholder of the Howard Group."
