Chapter 6 - The Hydraulic Cascade-6

"The files don't belong to your syndicate anymore, Croft," I said, my voice steady as iron, entirely clear of any human hesitation. I kept my large body positioned directly in front of the server desk console, shielding my three daughters behind my broad shoulders. "The federal grand jury in Washington received the preliminary signature logs forty minutes ago via the Swiss proxy. Your immunity agreement is already null and void within this jurisdiction."

Marcus Croft let out a sharp, mocking chuckle, taking a slow, measured step forward through the standing drainage water, the barrel of his carbine tracking my forehead with clinical precision. "The federal grand jury operates under standard statutory windows, David. My office just finalized an emergency legislative variance with the state development committee ten minutes ago, retroactively registering this entire industrial park as a protected corporate security zone. The state troopers are currently blocking the surface gates, David. Your FBI friends can't cross that perimeter line without triggering a massive jurisdictional conflict."

He took another step, his face distorting into an expression of raw, unadulterated avarice. "Now, step away from the terminal. I’m entering the delete cascade code."

"No, you're not," a soft, trembling voice rang out from the shadow of the server racks behind me.

Before I could catch her sleeve, Maya stepped into the light of the console, her face completely pale but her hazel eyes burning with a fierce, unexpected spark of pure maternal—sorry, sisterly—devotion. In her hands, she didn't hold a weapon or a tactical device; she held the single, sticky golden butterscotch wrapper she had quietly taken from the rusted metal lockbox in our attic.

"Look at the bottom pylon of the wrapper, Mr. Croft," Maya said, her young voice remarkably steady over the roar of the ventilation turbines. "My mother didn't just write a password in her notebook. She hardwired a localized biometric override partition into the old water filtration grid beneath this facility. If you pull that trigger... the high-pressure hydraulic drainage valves will blow, flooding this entire subterranean sub-level with fifty thousand gallons of chemical-treated canal water in thirty seconds."

Marcus Croft froze, his eyes widening slightly as the digital attendance tablet in his hand beeped twice, its screen flashing an angry, blinking neon red overlay: WARNING. STRUCTURAL HYDROSTATIC FAULT DETECTED. PRESSURE VALVES OVERRIDE: ACTIVE.

The distraction was exactly what the tactical matrix required.

With a raw, desperate roar of pure adrenaline, I launched my heavy frame across the console desk, my iron fire poker swung in a brutal, horizontal arc that caught Marcus Croft squarely across the forearms.

CRACK.

The automatic carbine flew from his frozen fingers, spinning off into the dark waters of the drainage trench below as the concussive force of my tackle drove his heavy body back against the concrete wall frame. The secondary operators behind him opened fire wildly into the ceiling panels, the rapid pop-pop-pop of submachine guns shattering the light fixtures and showering the room in a rain of white plaster dust and sparks.
