Chapter 2: The Video Nobody Could Explain Away

The hospital room was silent except for the soft rhythm of monitors and the distant sounds of evening staff changing shifts.

Nyla slept beside her mother, one small hand wrapped around the plastic cardinal keychain that a nurse had recovered from the grass.

Maya sat motionless in the chair.

Mrs. Patel's message remained open on her phone.

Attached: one video.

Length: 11 minutes, 42 seconds.

Maya pressed play.

The footage began with an ordinary afternoon.

Children rode bicycles in the distance.

A lawn mower hummed somewhere down the block.

Then Officer Rick Branson's cruiser appeared.

The timestamp in the corner recorded every second.

No edits.

No cuts.

No missing footage.

Nyla entered the frame carrying her pink backpack.

She walked exactly where she always walked.

On public land.

Visible.

Harmless.

A seven-year-old child heading home from school.

The cruiser stopped.

Branson exited.

Even through the camera speaker, his voice sounded aggressive from the beginning.

"You're trespassing."

Nyla immediately stopped walking.

She did not run.

She did not shout.

She did not threaten anyone.

She simply pointed toward the path.

"My mom said this is public."

Maya paused the video.

Her jaw tightened.

The county map confirmed it.

The easement belonged to the city.

Branson had known that.

Every patrol officer assigned to the district knew it.

Yet he continued.

The footage showed Mrs. Patel speaking from her porch.

"Officer, she's here every day."

Branson ignored her.

Then came the moment that changed everything.

Without any threatening behavior from Nyla, Branson opened the rear door of the cruiser.

The German Shepherd emerged.

Officer Kyle Drummond visibly hesitated.

The camera captured his exact words.

"Rick, she's just a kid."

Maya replayed that section three times.

A witness.

A fellow officer.

Captured on video.

No report could erase it.

No rewritten statement could explain it away.

And when the dog moved toward Nyla, the camera showed exactly what happened.

The child backed away.

She never advanced.

She never charged.

She never acted aggressively.

She tried to leave.

The report had claimed the opposite.

The video proved it.

By the time the footage ended, Maya understood something important.

This was no longer her word against Branson's.

The evidence was stronger than any argument.

And once the truth began moving, nobody would be able to stop it...
