Chapter 6 - The Knock on the Door

-1025-

The wind howled outside the private hangar office in Boulder, rattling the reinforced glass window panes as the winter storm intensified into a full-scale blizzard. Inside, the room was warm and quiet, save for the gentle hum of the heater and the soft, rhythmic clicking of Julian’s keyboard as he finalized the transmission receipts for the federal investigators.

Cynthia sat in a leather armchair near the corner, holding a warm cup of black coffee Julian had fetched from the terminal lounge. Her hands still trembled slightly, the adrenaline of the past hour slowly giving way to sheer emotional exhaustion.

"Do you realize what this means for Patricia?" Cynthia murmured, staring down into her coffee cup. "She’s built her entire life around the Reynolds family name, around Marcus’s supposed brilliance. When the feds raid that house, it won't just destroy Marcus. It will shatter everything his mother believes in."

"Patricia chose her path a long time ago," I replied evenly, walking over to check on the quadruplets, who were now quietly dozing off against one another on a comfortable sofa in the corner of the office, exhausted from the excitement of the day. "When Marcus abandoned me eight years ago—when he stole my trust fund and left me to face pregnancy alone in a strange city—Patricia knew about it. She didn't stop him. She helped him cover his tracks, patting him on the back while telling me I was just a passing mistake in his grand social ascent. You reap what you sow."

Cynthia nodded slowly, unable to argue with the hard truth of my words.

Suddenly, the encrypted satellite phone sitting beside Julian’s laptop buzzed sharply, vibrating against the wooden desk. Julian picked it up immediately, swiping the screen to accept the secure call.

"Vance here," Julian said crisply, his posture straightening instantly.

I turned around, watching him closely. The color on Julian’s face shifted slightly as he listened to the voice on the other end of the line.

"Confirmed?" Julian asked, his eyes darting toward me. "Understood. Keep us updated on the transport protocol."

He tapped the screen to end the call and looked up, a satisfied grin playing at the corner of his mouth.

"That was Agent Miller from the FBI white-collar division in Denver," Julian announced, leaning back in his chair. "Federal agents executed the raid on the Reynolds estate less than ten minutes ago. Marcus didn't even have time to finish his dessert. They slapped cuffs on him right in front of his mother and Uncle Richard."

A heavy weight lifted off my chest, though surprisingly, I felt no urge to cheer or gloat. There was only a profound sense of peace—the final, absolute closure of a chapter that had haunted my youth.

"And the assets?" I asked.

"All corporate accounts frozen. Personal holdings seized under emergency RICO provisions pending trial," Julian replied smoothly. "Marcus’s entire empire has been locked down. By tomorrow morning, he won't even be able to afford a cup of coffee without federal authorization."

Cynthia let out a long breath, wiping a stray tear from her cheek. "Good," she whispered fiercely. "Let him feel what it’s like to have everything stripped away in a single second. Exactly like he did to you eight years ago."

"Speaking of tomorrow," Julian said, checking his watch, "the weather is closing in faster than anticipated. Air traffic control is grounding all outbound private departures within the next twenty minutes. If we don't board the helicopter right now and take off for our secondary holding facility in Colorado Springs, we’ll be snowed in here for three days."

I looked over at the children. Noah was curled up with his head resting on Ethan's shoulder, while Sophia and Olivia were fast asleep wrapped in their matching holiday coats. They looked so peaceful, completely untouched by the ugly storm of adult greed and betrayal raging around them.

"Let's move," I said quietly, walking over to scoop Sophia up into my arms. "We're going home to Austin as soon as the airspace reopens. But tonight... tonight we rest."

As we stepped out of the hangar office back into the blinding swirl of snow, guided by the orange safety lights of the tarmac, I took one last deep breath of the freezing mountain air. The past was officially buried in the snow of Boulder, Colorado. My future—bright, secure, and entirely of my own making—awaited us back under the warm sun of Texas.
