Chapter 7 - The Mask Slips

-7-

The silence on the line dragged on for so long that I almost wondered if the call had disconnected. Then, a sharp, ragged intake of breath hissed through the receiver.

"What... what are you talking about?" Parker stammered, his carefully constructed veneer of calm finally shattering into a million pieces. The panic in his voice was palpable, raw, and entirely unscripted.

"You know exactly what I'm talking about, Parker," I replied, my voice as cold and hard as winter ice. "Your little private folder. P_Personal_Archive. The post-nuptial asset grab drafted by Sterling & Vance Associates. The guardianship petition trying to paint me as an unfit mother while positioning your mother and sister as saintly caregivers."

A heavy thud echoed through the phone, as if Parker had dropped his phone against a table or hit his steering wheel in sheer desperation.

"Clarissa... wait. Let me explain," Parker blurted out, his words tumbling over each other in a frantic, desperate rush. "That was... that was just a precaution! Julian—my lawyer cousin—just suggested we have it drawn up as a standard contingency plan in case things ever went south! It doesn't mean I was actually going to file it! You know how lawyers are, they always prepare for the worst-case scenario!"

"A standard contingency plan?" I scoffed, letting the full weight of my contempt bleed into my tone. "You spent months drafting a legal document to steal my pre-marital country house and strip away my custody rights behind my back, all while your mother and sister systematically tortured my seven-year-old son under the guise of a summer vacation? And you expect me to believe it’s just a harmless precaution?"

"That's not how it was supposed to happen!" Parker yelled defensively, finally dropping all pretenses of innocence. The mask of the doting, reasonable husband had completely burned away, leaving behind the desperate, selfish coward beneath. "You don't understand what it's like! My mother has made my life a living hell ever since we got married because you wouldn't bow down to her! She constantly whispered in my ear that you looked down on our family, that you thought you were better than us because you bought this house with your own money! I was just trying to keep the peace between the two most important women in my life!"

"By stabbing me in the back?" I retorted sharply. "By conspiring to steal my child and my home so your mother could feel like the queen bee of a household she doesn't own? Listen to yourself, Parker. You are a pathetic, spineless coward who traded his own family for the approval of a manipulative tyrant."

"Don't you dare talk to me like that!" Parker roared back, his voice cracking with humiliated fury. "I am your husband! I built a life with you! And you think you can just lock my family out like stray dogs? If you don't open those doors by sunrise tomorrow morning and apologize to my mother, I swear to God I will file every single one of those documents by Monday at 9:00 AM. I will drag you through a custody battle so brutal you won't even have the clothes on your back!"

The threat hung in the air, echoing through the phone like a declaration of total war.

For a split second, a normal person might have felt a shiver of fear. But as I sat at the kitchen island, knowing that Marcus Vance was already reviewing the encrypted files on his secure server, a profound sense of empowerment washed over me.

"File whatever you want, Parker," I said calmly, a dangerous smile touching the corners of my lips. "Because by the time Monday morning rolls around, you won't even have a law firm willing to represent you once they realize you tried to weaponize fabricated evidence and unauthorized recordings against a protective mother."

"What are you talking about?" Parker muttered, a sudden spike of unease piercing his anger.

"Oh, did I forget to mention?" I continued sweetly. "I didn't just find your legal drafts. Marcus Vance already has everything. Every single document, every screenshot, and—oh, yes—the one-hour-and-forty-four-minute audio recording of your mother and sister explicitly plotting to abuse and starve my son."

The line went dead silent.

Marcus Vance. The name alone carried the weight of a legal wrecking ball. Julian Vance, Parker's cousin and lawyer, would have a heart attack if he realized Marcus had just been retained to dismantle their entire premeditated scheme piece by piece.

"Marcus... Vance?" Parker whispered, the blood draining entirely from his voice. "You... you retained Marcus? Julian's cousin?"

"The very same," I replied cheerfully. "Have a wonderful night sleeping in your empty city apartment, Parker. Because your nightmare is only just beginning."

Click.

I ended the call, turned off my phone, and set it facedown on the marble countertop.

The house was quiet again. Upstairs, Dustin was sleeping soundly, safe and protected under a roof that belonged to us, earned by my sweat, and guarded by my unbreakable love.

Little did Parker know, the audio recording Ellie had accidentally captured wasn't even the most damning piece of evidence in our possession. The digital trail led much deeper—straight into financial records Parker thought he had successfully hidden for years.

And when Monday morning arrived, the tables weren't just going to turn; they were going to crush everything Parker and his mother had built upon their mountain of lies.
