Chapter 4 - Storage Unit 108-4

The interior of the subterranean sub-level beneath the logistics park was a cavernous, low-ceilinged vault of wet masonry, roaring ventilation turbines, and exposed high-voltage conduits that vibrated with a deafening, industrial hum that amplified the frantic tempo of my heart. The air down here was hot, thick, smelling faintly of hot axle grease, diesel exhaust, and the sharp chemical tang of short-circuiting electrical lines running under the floorboards.

We followed the narrow, red-lit utility corridor until it opened up into a large, vaulted concrete room dominated by a single row of heavy, reinforced corrugated steel doors. Standing before the door marked Unit 108 was the master cryptographic console terminal—the central database hub for my grandfather's maritime trust division. Stamped at the top of the encrypted routing tracks was a name that made my gray eyes narrow into stone: NORALINE HOLDINGS LLC.

Sitting at the master terminal console, his expensive wedding tux jacket thrown over the back of a plastic tool chest, his fingers moving with clinical speed across a mechanical keyboard, was Dwight Whitmore. Beside his laptop screen sat Ashley Vance, her bridal party makeup slightly smudged beneath the amber glare of the emergency track lamps, her hands cradling the carbon-fiber document box like a stolen crown. Behind them, Ryan stood near the entryway pylon, his phone still raised to record the transaction as if it were a game.

"Step away from the keyboard, Dwight!" my voice roared through the concrete room like a pipe clap of thunder, my heavy leather winter boots splashing violently through deep pools of oil-stained drainage water as Christopher and ten heavily armed FBI tactical operators flooded the vault floor, their rifle barrels raised and rock-steady. "Federal agents! Put your hands on your heads and step away from the desk!"

Dwight didn't panic. He didn't turn around to argue or plead for a corporate settlement or a multi-million-dollar compromise. With a single, smooth, practiced movement, his right hand reached beneath the administrative desk console, his fingers emerging with a short-barreled compact automatic carbine, leveling the barrel straight at Christopher’s chest before the plaster dust could even clear from the doorway frame.

"You really are a remarkably stubborn woman, Elizabeth," Dwight hissed, his voice a cold, mechanical rasp that carried zero human empathy. His finger tightened around the trigger guard, his knuckles turning a sharp, bloodless white. "The Nicosia wire hits one hundred percent in exactly forty-five seconds! If your federal specialists take another step... I will execute an immediate thermal runaway script, vaporizing every digital footprint of your family trust before the courts can even assign a defense attorney to my file."
