Chapter 11 - The Arrest of the Titan

-11-
The heavy oak doors of the grand ballroom flew open with a resounding crash.
There were no private security guards this time. No corporate fixers. No paid-off municipal cops.
Marching down the center aisle in crisp, dark uniforms were federal agents from the United States Department of Justice, flanked by state troopers carrying federal warrants stamped with the signature of a federal district judge.
The lead agent, a tall woman with silver-streaked hair and a face carved from granite, marched straight past the stunned crowd of elites and stopped directly in front of Richard Vance.
She pulled a folded document from her leather folio and snapped it open with a sharp snap.
“Richard Vance,” she announced, her voice echoing off the gilded plaster ceiling with absolute, unyielding authority. “You are under arrest for corporate conspiracy, environmental terrorism, mail fraud, obstruction of justice, and the premeditated murder of Arthur Reed.”
The murmurs in the crowd exploded into a wall of frantic, deafening noise. Flashbulbs from hidden cameras began popping like strobe lights as reporters—tipped off anonymously by Luka’s network hours earlier—pushed their way into the ballroom from the side exits.
Richard Vance staggered back another step, his knees finally giving out entirely. He collapsed into a gold-plated velvet chair, staring blankly at the floor as two federal agents stepped forward, gripped his arms, and hauled him to his feet with unceremonious force.
“This is a mistake!” Richard croaked, his voice cracking with pathetic desperation as silver handcuffs clicked shut around his aging wrists. “My lawyers—get my lawyers! This is corporate sabotage! That video is deepfake trash! You can’t touch me! I own half of—!”
“You own nothing anymore, Richard,” the federal agent interrupted coldly, snapping the second cuff into place. “Your assets have been frozen by federal decree under the RICO Act. Every subsidiary, every offshore account, and every square foot of real estate held by Vance Enterprises is now under federal receivership.”
Julian stood frozen a few feet away, watching his father—the invincible titan of Chicago real estate—being dragged toward the exit in handcuffs like a common criminal. The color had drained completely from Julian’s face, leaving him looking ghastly and hollow.
As the agents hauled Richard past us, the old man lifted his head, his venomous eyes locking onto me with pure, unadulterated hatred.
“You little bitch,” Richard spat through broken teeth as he was shoved toward the double doors. “You think you’ve won? You’re nothing! You’re just a penniless nobody holding a bastard child! You’ll rot in the gutter!”
“She’s not alone, Richard,” a deep, gravelly voice echoed beside me.
Luka stepped forward, towering over the handcuffed billionaire, his tattooed hands resting casually in his pockets, his amber eyes burning with cold vengeance.
“And she’s never going back to the gutter,” Luka added softly. “Because everything you built is gone.”
The heavy doors slammed shut behind the federal entourage, cutting off Richard’s furious curses.
The ballroom descended into an awkward, stunned silence. Three hundred of Chicago’s wealthiest elites stood frozen, not knowing where to look, terrified that associating with the Vance family for even another second would drag them down into the vortex.
Julian stood alone in the center of the polished parquet floor. The golden boy. The corporate heir. The man who had walked out of a hospital room twelve hours ago believing he had successfully discarded a burden.
Slowly, agonizingly, Julian turned his head. His eyes locked onto me.
The arrogance was entirely gone. In its place was a pathetic, whimpering shell of a man staring at the ruins of his entire existence.
“Elena...” Julian whispered, taking a trembling step forward, his hands outstretched in a silent, pathetic plea for mercy. “Elena, please... you know how my father was. He pressured me! He forced me into the marriage, he forced me to cut you off! But I’m your husband! We have a history! We can fix this—we can—”
“Stop talking, Julian,” I interrupted. My voice wasn't angry. It wasn't bitter. It was completely, terrifyingly cold.
I reached into my handbag, pulled out a single piece of thick white paper, and let it flutter down to the parquet floor right at his feet.
It was the divorce petition. Filed electronically twenty minutes ago. Complete with a signed waiver of alimony, a full relinquishment of any claim to his corporate assets, and an ironclad custody order granting me sole, absolute legal and physical custody of our daughter—with zero visitation rights for a convicted felon’s son.
Julian stared down at the paper as if it were a venomous snake.
“You can sign it,” I said quietly, stepping past him without breaking my stride, “or my lawyers can let the federal prosecutors present it as part of your family’s RICO indictment tomorrow morning. The choice is yours.”
Julian dropped to his knees on the polished floor, his fingers trembling as they brushed against the paper.
I didn't look back. I didn't slow down.
Luka walked beside me, his hand resting once again at the small of my back, guiding me through the parting crowd toward the private service elevator.
As the brass doors closed behind us, cutting off the whispers, the cameras, and the wreckage of the world I had left behind, I let out a breath I felt like I had been holding for ten long years.

The nightmare was over.
And the rest of my life was just beginning.
