Chapter 5 - The Reinforcements Below-2-

The heavy, rhythmic thud of boots echoing up the concrete stairwell reverberated through the hospital corridor like the ticking of a doomsday clock. Each step sounded deliberate, heavy, and coordinated—not the panicked scramble of hospital staff or security guards responding to a disturbance, but the synchronized march of men trained to move as a tactical unit.
Buster’s growl escalated from a warning rumble into a full, resonant thunder that rattled the glass panes of the door. His hackles were standing straight up, his massive shoulders bunched and ready to spring. He knew what I knew: these weren't friendly arrivals.
Sarah didn't flinch at the sound of the approaching boots. She simply turned her head toward the end of the corridor, her cold smile still plastered across her face, as if she were greeting guests at a dinner party she had meticulously planned for months.
"You always were too predictable, Mark," Sarah murmured, her voice carrying a mocking cadence that made my blood boil. "You spent twelve years in the Army believing that honor, discipline, and a neat uniform could protect you from the real world. You never realized that the real wars aren't fought on distant battlefields with rifles. They're fought in courtrooms, in land registries, and behind the closed doors of respectable suburban homes."
"Who’s down there, Sarah?" I stepped fully out of the doorway, placing myself directly between her and the hospital room where Chloe slept. My posture shifted instantly into a combat-ready stance, my weight balanced evenly on the balls of my feet. "Who did you bring into a children's hospital?"
"Friends of the family," she replied smoothly, taking a slow step back as Buster took an aggressive half-inch forward, his teeth gleaming under the fluorescent lights. "People who understand that some assets need to be consolidated... permanently."
Before she could finish her sentence, two men emerged from the stairwell door at the end of the corridor.
They weren't wearing police uniforms, nor were they private security guards. Both men were dressed in identical charcoal-gray suits, wearing crisp white shirts with no ties, their hair cropped short in military-style high-and-tight cuts. Their faces were completely expressionless, their eyes scanning the hallway with the practiced, mechanical sweep of private contractors or corporate enforcers.
In their right hands, they each carried a sleek, heavy-duty aluminum briefcase—the kind used to transport high-value legal documents, cryptographic hardware, or covert communications gear.
My military instincts flared to life. Private security contractors. Corporate cleanup crew.
These weren't common thugs or neighborhood accomplices. These were professionals hired by someone with deep pockets and absolute legal immunity—someone like Victoria Vance, the shadowy figure behind the offshore ledger accounts and the master surveillance files I had discovered on Sarah's computer.
The lead enforcer stopped ten paces away, his eyes locking onto me with cold, professional indifference. He didn't look at Buster, nor did he acknowledge Sarah standing beside him. His entire focus was fixed squarely on me.
"Mr. Miller," the man said, his voice deep, raspy, and devoid of any regional accent. "We advise you to step aside and return to your daughter's bedside. This is a private matter concerning the legal guardianship restructuring of the Miller estate."
"Guardistructuring?" I spat the word out, my voice dropping into a low, dangerous growl that matched my dog's. "You break into a hospital corridor with corporate goons to talk about restructuring while my daughter is recovering from physical exhaustion and neglect? You have ten seconds to turn around and walk back down that stairwell, or I won't be responsible for what my dog does to your shins."
The enforcer didn't blink. He raised his left hand, and instead of pulling a weapon, he tapped a small earpiece resting in his ear canal.
"Target is non-compliant," the man spoke into the hidden mic. "Initiating secondary protocol."
Secondary protocol.
The words hadn't even finished echoing off the tiled walls when the emergency overhead lights in the hospital corridor suddenly flickered, hissed, and died completely.
In the span of a single heartbeat, the entire hallway plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness, illuminated only by the faint, eerie blue glow of the exit signs and the bright red emergency battery strips running along the baseboards.
Simultaneously, a sharp, piercing alarm shrieked to life somewhere in the basement of the hospital—a deafening fire alarm wail that instantly flooded the quiet night with screaming sirens and flashing strobe lights.
Inside Chloe’s room, a terrified, muffled cry pierced the dark.
"Dad! Dad, what's happening?!"
Chloe’s voice cut straight through my heart like a jagged blade. Panic, dark and suffocating, threatened to overwhelm my military discipline. They had cut the power. They had triggered a localized alarm to create chaos, panic, and confusion, forcing the hospital staff into lockdown while they executed their move.
I didn't hesitate. I spun around on my heel, diving back into the dark hospital room toward Chloe’s bed, my hands reaching out in the dark to grab her trembling small shoulders.
"I've got you, sweetheart! I'm right here!" I yelled over the screaming klaxon.

At that exact moment, a heavy, muffled thud echoed from the doorway, followed by the terrifying sound of a scuffle, a deep, furious canine roar, and the sickening sound of metal clattering violently against the tiled floor.
Buster had engaged.
