Chapter 10 - THE WINTER GALA

-10
The annual Hudson Children’s Foundation winter gala was the premier social event of the Manhattan calendar, bringing together the city's most influential philanthropists, corporate titans, and political leaders into the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel.
For the past five years, the gala had been a place of bitter memories—the exact spot where my quiet life had been shattered by the revelation of Gabriel's secret family and the terrifying suddenness of the Vane syndicate's shadow.
Tonight, however, the ballroom was a triumphant monument to redemption and survival.
The room was breathtaking, decorated in pristine winter whites, shimmering silver ornaments, and thousands of twinkling fairy lights that reflected off the crystal chandeliers. At the center of the philanthropic efforts was the newly funded pediatric cancer research wing—a massive, multi-million-dollar initiative spearheaded entirely by the Hudson Foundation under my direct leadership.
I stood near the entrance of the grand ballroom, wearing a stunning, floor-length midnight-blue velvet evening gown that caught the ambient light with every step. Beside me stood Gabriel, impeccable in a custom-tailored black tuxedo, his hand resting securely against the small of my back.
"You look breathtaking, Mrs. Cross," Gabriel murmured into my ear, his breath warm against my neck.
"You keep saying that, Mr. Cross, and I might actually start believing I'm the most important person in this room," I teased softly, turning my head to offer a bright, genuine smile.
"You are the most important person in any room you enter," he replied without a single second of hesitation, his slate-gray eyes locking onto mine with absolute, unwavering devotion.
Before I could retort, the crystal clear chime of a microphone feedback system echoed through the grand ballroom, drawing the attention of the five hundred gathered elites.
Stepping up to the central stage was the mayor of New York City, flanked by the executive board of the Hudson Foundation.
"Ladies and gentlemen," the mayor announced, his voice booming warmly across the room. "Tonight, we celebrate not just the resilience of our community, but the extraordinary vision of two individuals who have dedicated their lives, their resources, and their fierce protection to the future of our children. Please join me in welcoming to the stage our keynote benefactors: Mr. and Mrs. Gabriel Cross."
A thunderous wave of applause erupted across the ballroom. The crowd parted, creating a wide, sparkling corridor leading straight to the raised dais.
Gabriel looked down at me, offering his arm with a quiet, gentlemanly grace. I looped my arm through his, feeling the solid, unshakeable strength of his biceps beneath the black wool sleeve.
We walked down the corridor together, stepping up onto the stage under the brilliant glare of the spotlight. The sea of Manhattan’s elite stood applauding, their faces a blur of respect, admiration, and awe.
I looked out across the crowd, thinking of the terrified, heartbroken woman who had stood in this very ballroom five years ago holding a secret she thought would destroy her. I thought of the lonely nights, the cold hospital rooms, and the terrifying highway ambushes.
We had survived it all. We had won the war.
As the applause swelled around us, Gabriel stepped up to the microphone, his arm wrapping securely around my waist, pulling me firmly against his side as he looked out at the city he had conquered and the family he had fought tooth and nail to reclaim.

"Thank you," Gabriel’s deep, resonant baritone filled the grand ballroom, commanding absolute silence. "My wife always tells me that a true empire isn't measured by the cargo ships you own or the wealth you accumulate in a bank account. It's measured by the strength of the walls you build around the people you love. Tonight, we celebrate those walls. And I promise you—they are never, ever coming down."
The applause that followed shook the crystal chandeliers, but I barely heard it. I was looking into the eyes of the man who had burned the world down just to keep me safe, knowing with absolute, unshakeable certainty that we had finally found our forever.
