Chapter 2 - The Cryptographic Smoke Screen-2

The silence that settled back over the suffocating dining room as Victoria turned away to wipe her hands with a linen napkin was a heavy, absolute thing. The air within the mansion grew rapidly thick, smelling faintly of hot plastic insulation, damp stone, and the sharp chemical tang of short-circuiting corporate dreams.
Within forty minutes, after the final high-society guest had cleared the front entryway gates under the impression that they had merely witnessed a routine domestic disciplinary action, the automated deadbolts on the mansion’s double doors clicked shut with a sharp, hydraulic hiss. The bright green "Exit" signs shifted instantly to a flashing crimson as the building's central server matrix was intercepted by a remote network proxy node.
On my personal mobile terminal, hidden beneath the utility lining of the pantry portal, the screen began to vibrate with a frantic, uncoordinated velocity. It wasn't an incoming cellular call; it was a rapid, scrolling cascade of emerald-green financial ledger lines routing straight out of an unmappable database annex in downtown Boston.

"Connection established, Elena," my older brother, Victor Cross—the chief enforcement counsel for the United States District Court's Financial Crimes Division—said through my wireless earpiece. His voice was a hard, unyielding baritone of absolute tactical focus. "The Nicosia pipeline... the offshore shell company Victoria established under the name Noraline Holdings last winter... our cyber unit just finalized the deep-system sweep ten minutes ago. The master validation files are completely mirrored to our data core."
A bitter, cold smile touched my lips as I wiped the residual yellow soup from my chin dressing. "Victoria believed my silence for the last fourteen months was a confession of defeat, Victor. She thought because I knelt on her floorboards and allowed her to humiliate me in front of her donors, I was blind to her transaction logs. She had no idea that the smart security camera hidden inside the casing of the living room bookshelf... it’s been broadcasting her private financial diaries straight to the federal grand jury since the midnight bell."
