Chapter 14 - THE RETURN TO THE EMPIRE

14

Two days after leaving the alpine chalet in Switzerland, my private jet touched down on the tarmac of the private executive airfield just outside the city. The sun was setting, casting a brilliant, fiery orange glow across the Manhattan skyline as the aircraft taxied to a smooth halt.

I walked down the stairs of the jet, my black wool coat sweeping the pavement, the heavy satellite phone resting securely in my bag. Waiting by the base of the mobile stairs was Marcus Vance, accompanied by Thomas and a phalanx of our primary corporate security directors.

Marcus stepped forward, his expression grave but relieved as he handed me a thick leather-bound dossier.

"Welcome back, Mara," Marcus said respectfully. "The federal prosecutors have officially upgraded the charges against Julian Sterling, Grant Mercer, and Harrison Vance to treason and corporate terrorism. Bail has been denied across all jurisdictions, and their respective defense teams have formally submitted plea negotiation requests."

I took the dossier, flipping it open to scan the summary page. "Deny the negotiations," I said coldly. "I want maximum statutory penalties applied to every single one of them. Let it serve as a permanent reminder to anyone else in the corporate hierarchy who thinks they can play chess with the Kingsley name."

"Consider it done," Marcus replied, falling in step beside me as we walked toward the sleek armored Maybach idling on the tarmac. "What about the restructuring of the European division?"

"Appoint Sarah Jenkins as senior managing director," I said without hesitation. "She’s been loyal to my father for fifteen years, and she has the razor-sharp mind required to clean out Julian’s remaining sleeper cells."

"An excellent choice," Marcus nodded approvingly.

As the Maybach glided smoothly out of the airfield and onto the highway leading back toward the estate, I looked out the tinted window at the glowing towers of the city.

The storm had passed. The predators had been cleared from the board.

When the vehicle finally swept through the iron security gates of our family estate and pulled up to the grand front entrance, the heavy oak doors swung open immediately.

And there, standing in the bright entryway, was Ellie.

My three-year-old daughter ran forward on unsteady little legs, her golden curls bouncing as she threw her arms wide open.

"Mommy!" she squealed happily.

I didn't hesitate. I dropped my handbag, fell to my knees on the polished marble floor, and scooped her up into my arms, burying my face in her soft hair as she wrapped her tiny arms tightly around my neck.

She was safe. Our empire was secure. And the shadow of the gold falcon would protect her—and our legacy—for generations to come.
