PART 2: The Ultrasound

The private maternity clinic looked more like a luxury hotel than a medical facility.

Fresh orchids decorated the reception desk.

Soft piano music floated through hidden speakers.

Large windows overlooked the city skyline.

And in the center waiting area sat Ethan Cole's entire family.

His mother.

His father.

His sister Lauren.

Two aunts.

A cousin.

And Vanessa.

The woman Ethan had destroyed his marriage for.

Vanessa sat proudly with one hand resting on her pregnant stomach.

Every few minutes she smiled at the family as though she had already won.

Because in her mind, she had.

The wife was gone.

The divorce was signed.

The children were out of the way.

And today, according to everyone present, the future heir of the Cole family would finally be confirmed.

A son.

The boy Ethan's mother had wanted for years.

The boy Lauren constantly talked about.

The boy Vanessa promised she would give them.

At exactly 10:15 a.m., Ethan arrived.

He looked energized.

Happy.

More excited than Natalie had seen him in years.

His mother immediately stood.

"There he is."

She kissed his cheek.

"Today is the day."

Ethan smiled.

"It already is."

Vanessa reached for his hand.

He squeezed it affectionately.

The same hand that had signed divorce papers less than thirty minutes earlier.

Lauren laughed.

"Imagine Natalie right now."

Nobody answered.

Then Lauren continued anyway.

"Probably sitting in some tiny apartment crying."

The family chuckled.

Vanessa smiled politely but said nothing.

She had learned that silence often sounded more elegant than cruelty.

The truth was she enjoyed every second.

For two years she had waited for this moment.

Two years of secret dinners.

Secret weekends.

Secret promises.

Now everything belonged to her.

The husband.

The house.

The future.

Or so she believed.

At 10:27 a.m., a nurse appeared.

"Mrs. Vanessa Brooks?"

Vanessa immediately stood.

The entire family rose with her.

The nurse blinked.

"Oh... only one support person may enter."

Ethan stepped forward instantly.

"That's me."

His mother looked disappointed.

Lauren rolled her eyes.

But nobody argued.

As Ethan disappeared down the hallway beside Vanessa, his mother sat back down with a satisfied smile.

"This is finally happening."

His father nodded.

"Our family name continues."

Lauren crossed her legs.

"And Mom finally gets her grandson."

The women laughed.

None of them noticed the older receptionist behind the desk.

Because the receptionist was watching them carefully.

Listening.

And silently judging every word.

Twenty minutes later, Ethan and Vanessa sat inside Examination Room Four.

The ultrasound technician smiled professionally.

"Ready?"

Vanessa beamed.

"Very."

Ethan squeezed her hand.

The monitor flickered to life.

Gray shapes appeared.

Tiny movements.

The technician measured several angles.

Typed notes.

Took screenshots.

Everything seemed normal.

Until her smile disappeared.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Vanessa noticed first.

"What is it?"

The technician didn't answer immediately.

She adjusted the probe.

Measured again.

Typed more notes.

Then excused herself.

"I'll get the doctor."

The room instantly changed.

Vanessa looked at Ethan.

"Why does she need the doctor?"

"I'm sure it's nothing."

But his voice lacked confidence.

Five minutes later, the doctor entered.

A middle-aged woman named Dr. Alvarez.

Experienced.

Calm.

Respected.

She reviewed the images quietly.

Then she looked up.

"Mr. Cole. Ms. Brooks."

Neither spoke.

Dr. Alvarez folded her hands.

"There are several things we need to discuss."

Vanessa's smile disappeared completely.

"What things?"

The doctor chose her words carefully.

"The first concerns the baby's sex."

Ethan leaned forward.

His heart raced.

A son.

This was supposed to be the confirmation.

The final victory.

Dr. Alvarez looked directly at them.

"You're having a girl."

The silence was immediate.

Vanessa blinked.

Ethan stared.

Neither moved.

For several seconds nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa laughed nervously.

"That's fine."

But it clearly wasn't.

Not to her.

Not after years of promising otherwise.

Not after everything.

Ethan forced a smile.

"A girl is fine."

Yet disappointment flashed across his face before he could hide it.

The doctor continued.

"And there is a second matter."

The room grew colder.

Dr. Alvarez took a breath.

Then delivered the sentence that changed everything.

"The dates don't match."

Vanessa froze.

"What?"

"The developmental measurements suggest conception occurred significantly later than indicated in your records."

Ethan frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Dr. Alvarez answered carefully.

"It means the pregnancy timeline appears inconsistent."

The color drained from Vanessa's face.

Ethan slowly turned toward her.

For the first time all morning, fear appeared.

Real fear.

Because suddenly a question entered the room.

A question neither wanted asked.

If the dates didn't match...

Then when exactly had this baby been conceived?

And more importantly...

Who was the father?

Outside in the waiting room, Ethan's family still smiled.

Still celebrated.

May you like

Still discussed baby names.

Completely unaware that behind a closed door, the future they had mocked Natalie for losing had just begun to collapse.
