Chapter 2 - The Nicosia Proxy-2

The compact consultation room behind the diner's private kitchen annex felt less like a restaurant utility block and more like a high-security tactical bunker. The air conditioning was turned up to an icy frequency that made my shoulders shiver beneath my simple off-white wedding dress, the smell of industrial bleach, dry ozone, and cold espresso thick in the humid space.

Major General Thomas Vance—Aaron’s oldest commanding officer from his days as a senior communications logistics analyst for the military intelligence unit—sat at the stainless-steel prep table. He wore a sharp civilian trench coat, his gold federal badge glinting beneath the harsh glare of the overhead fluorescent tubes, a thick black leather evidence binder clutched securely under his arm.

"Coralie," General Vance said, his voice a crisp baritone that instantly silenced my sister's frantic attempts to gather her purse. He turned the digital diagnostic monitor to face us, the screen rendering a rapid, scrolling cascade of emerald-green financial transactions. "The federal financial crimes division just finalized the master data extraction loop on the Pan-Atlantic Holdings servers in Cyprus fifteen minutes ago. The data core your husband Aaron just pulled out from beneath those glazed donuts... it holds the primary cryptographic validation keys."

I sat heavily onto a metal folding chair, my fingers fumbling with my cheap rhinestone wedding band, the world spinning backward through three years of systematic family humiliation. Every time Sandra had left an envelope of cash on our kitchen counter with a patronizing sticky note... every time her wealthy husband, Samuel, had sent me roses with an invitation to his Bel-Air estate... it hadn't been an act of protective charity. It had been an engineered corporate smoke screen.

"They picked your family, Coralie," Aaron said, kneeling beside my chair, his hand wrapping gently around my wrist with a firm, protective strength that grounded my panic. "They knew that your sister Sandra was ambitious, greedy, and completely obsessed with entering the upper-class social tiers of this valley. Samuel brought her into the corporate matrix four years ago, using her access to our home to duplicate my mother's biometric verification tokens. They needed my sister’s medical allocation trust cleared out to fund their residential land-banking syndicates downtown."

"This is unverified electronic slander!" Sandra's husband, Samuel, bellowed from the doorway, his posture rigid as iron as two uniform state police investigators stepped past his shoulders, blocking his exit lane with their tactical rifle barrels raised to the low-ready position. "Our real estate group operates under a contractually binding municipal grant! The federal marshals have zero legal authority to freeze our corporate assets based on a childhood financial diary!"

"The grants were frozen at noon today, Samuel," Agent Harris—the lead FBI financial investigator who had just stepped through the kitchen service hatch—corrected ruthlessly. "The eight-five million dollars you siphoned out of the leukemia research fund... it’s been officially re-routed back to the Bennett trust fund under the National Security Asset Seizure Act. Your administrative clearance keys were deactivated at the opening bell."
