The machine didn't explode; it hummed, a low, steady sound that vibrated through the foundation of the city. The violet light was gone, replaced by a warm, golden pulse that felt like the heartbeat of a giant. The architects, the ones who had tried to build the harvest, stood there, dazed, their power bleeding away into the earth, their secrets exposed to the light.
They weren't leaders anymore. They were just people.
I watched as the city above us began to shift. The sirens stopped. The shouting ceased. A quiet, profound peace settled over the streets, a silence that wasn't empty, but full of potential.
"They’re losing their memory of the control," Hannah whispered, her eyes wide. "They don't know who they were anymore."
"They’re starting over," I said.
We ascended to the park. The city was glowing—not with artificial light, but with the soft, warm light of a billion individual lives being lived. People were walking, talking, sitting on benches, looking up at the sky.
