Chapter 14 - The Bloodline Revealed-14-

Claire Whitaker stared at me as if she were looking into a ghost mirror. The resemblance wasn't just familial; it was startling, down to the slight tilt of the head and the nervous way her fingers gripped the edge of her textbooks.
"I'm Julian," I said softly, keeping my hands visible and open, stepping back slightly to give her space. "Your brother."
Claire’s eyes widened, shifting from disbelief to sudden, defensive hostility. She took a sharp step back, slamming her hand against the doorframe as if preparing to slam it shut in my face.
"You're lying," she said, her voice rising with panic. "My father told me I was an only child. He visited me in secret every month for twenty years, and he never once mentioned a brother in New York. Who sent you? Is this another one of Eleanor's games?"
The mention of my mother’s name made my blood run cold.
"You know about Eleanor?" I asked, stepping closer, holding up my hands in a placating gesture.
"Of course I know about her," Claire hissed, her voice trembling with restrained fury. "She’s the reason my father died. He called me three weeks ago—right before his heart attack—and told me that if anything ever happened to him, I needed to run, because his wife had discovered my existence and viewed me as a threat to her precious dynasty."
The final piece of the puzzle clicked violently into place.
My father hadn't just been planning to expose the municipal archive corruption; he had been preparing to legally acknowledge Claire, bringing her into the family trust and shattering my mother’s absolute control over the Whitaker estate. That was the ultimate catalyst for the murder.
"Your father didn't die of a natural heart attack, Claire," I said, the words heavy and brutal as I delivered the truth. "He was poisoned by our mother. And those men who killed him were coming for you next."
Claire’s breath hitched. The textbooks slipped from her fingers, clattering loudly against the apartment hallway floor as she covered her mouth with both hands, tears spilling over her lashes.
"No..." she sobbed, sliding down the doorframe until she was sitting on the carpet, completely broken. "No, he promised me he was safe... he said he had hidden the evidence where nobody could ever touch us."
I knelt down beside her on the floor, gently resting a hand on her trembling shoulder. For the first time in my life, I wasn't the billionaire heir, the corporate shark, or the captive pawn of an abusive dynasty. I was simply an older brother sharing the grief of a shattered family.
"He did hide it," I said softly. "We found the archives in the sub-level vaults of Whitaker Tower. Eleanor is under arrest, and the federal government has seized everything. You're safe now, Claire. I swear it to you."

She looked up at me, her gray-blue eyes searching my face for any sign of deceit, finding only the absolute, unyielding truth of our shared bloodline.
Slowly, hesitantly, Claire reached out and wrapped her arms around my neck, burying her face in my shoulder as she wept for the father we had both lost to a monster in a Chanel suit.
