CHAPTER 27: THE MARITIME AMBUSH

CHAPTER 27: THE MARITIME AMBUSH
The rain was coming down in sheets as the federal SUVs tore down the concrete lanes of the North Pier.
The shipping terminal was a maze of towering steel cargo containers, casting massive shadows under the flickering yellow industrial lights. The wind off Lake Michigan was vicious, spraying freezing water across the windshields.
We stopped fifty yards from the gangway of the Crescent Star—the massive container ship humming with engine power.
"Stay in the vehicle, Evelyn," Bennett ordered, drawing his sidearm.
"My team handles the boarding protocol."
But as the tactical squad moved forward, a sudden explosion of white smoke erupted from the base of the crane above us.
Flash. Bang.
The flashbang grenades blinded the lead agents, sending them scattering for cover behind the steel pillars.
Through the white smoke, a shape blurred.
Two men in dark tactical gear lunged from behind a container, their targets precise. They weren't trying to fight the feds.
They were targeting our vehicle.
Before I could lock the doors, the passenger window shattered inward, glass spraying across my lap. A gloved hand reached through the ruins, grabbing my coat collar and pulling me violently out into the freezing rain.
"Evy!" Hannah screamed, lunging across the seat, but a secondary operative jammed a weapon through the driver's side, pinning her in place.
Helena Sterling stepped out of the shadow of the cargo crane, holding an umbrella, her grey coat pristine despite the storm.
"The ledger, Hannah," Helena called out over the roar of the ship's engines.
"Or your sister stays on this vessel when it leaves the jurisdiction."
