Chapter 5 - The Intercom Revelation-5

The crackle of the house intercom echoed through every single room of the twenty-million-dollar mansion, spilling out through the outdoor speakers into the muggy afternoon heat where dozens of stranded guests, confused caterers, and furious relatives were still trying to figure out how to leave the gated property.

“Testing, one, two, three,” my voice boomed through the speakers, deep, calm, and chillingly clear.

Outside in the courtyard, Spencer, who was frantically arguing with Senator Vance near the front gates, stopped mid-sentence. His mother, Evelyn, clutched her gold necklaces, staring up at the stone walls of the mansion as if the house itself had come alive.

“I hope everyone is enjoying the afternoon,” I said over the speakers, my voice carrying into every corner of the estate. “For those of you who don't know me, my name is Laura Vance. I am the woman who bought the suit Spencer is wearing, the ring he gave to Penelope, and the very ground you are standing on.”

“Laura! Turn off the damn mic!” Spencer screamed into his phone, trying desperately to call the internal house line, but the signals were completely blocked by my lockdown protocol.

“Eight years ago,” my voice continued, unbothered by his shouting, “I was told a story. I was told that my husband was near death in an ICU in Key West. I was told that the only way to save his life was to sell everything my parents had left me. I was told that my baby died because I slipped on a wet step in a hospital.”

In the basement, the progress bar on my drive reached 78%. The heavy steel blast doors shuddered as the gunman outside used an industrial plasma torch, sparks flying through the narrow seams.

“But technology is a wonderful thing,” I continued over the house intercom. “It keeps records that people forget to delete. Like the medical records stored right here in the subterranean vault Spencer built beneath the wine cellar. Like the security camera footage from Miami Central Hospital, dated October 14, 2018.”

In the courtyard, Senator Vance turned his glare toward Spencer. “What is she talking about? What vault?”

Spencer’s face turned completely white, the color draining from his lips until he looked like a corpse. “She’s... she’s crazy! She’s off her meds! Senator, don't listen to her!”

“I have just broadcasted that video footage,” I said, pressing a single key on the vault console, “to every mobile device currently connected to the estate’s local Wi-Fi network. Including yours, Senator Vance. And yours, Penelope.”

Simultaneously, over a hundred cellphones in the courtyard chimed with a high-pitched alert notification.

Guests pulled out their phones. Penelope looked down at her screen. Senator Vance unlocked his phone.

The video automatically began playing on every screen.

The clear, high-definition clip showed Evelyn deliberately pouring oil onto the stairwell steps. It showed my violent fall. It showed Spencer walking up the stairs on his own two feet, handing a thick envelope of bribe money to the trauma doctor, and laughing as they loaded my bleeding, unconscious body onto a gurney.

Gasps of absolute horror rippled through the crowd of guests.

Penelope let out a sharp, horrified scream, dropping her phone onto the gravel driveway as if it had turned into a burning coal. She looked at Spencer with sheer disgust, taking three rapid steps backward away from him.

“You... you monster!” Penelope shrieked, tears ruining her face. “You killed her baby!”

“Penelope, wait! It’s an AI edit! It’s fake!” Spencer pleaded, grabbing for her arm, but Senator Vance stepped between them, his face twisted in pure rage.

Senator Vance delivered a brutal, sweeping right hook straight to Spencer’s jaw.

CRACK!

Spencer hit the gravel hard, spitting blood onto his pristine ivory suit jacket.

“If my daughter’s name is connected to you for another second, I will ruin you!” Senator Vance roared, drawing his phone and furiously dialing his chief of staff. “Cancel every contract! Block his bank accounts! Call the District Attorney immediately!”

Evelyn dropped to her knees beside her son, wailing like a hysterical banshee. “Spencer! Get up! Tell them it’s a lie! Tell them!”

In the basement, the download progress bar reached 100%.

"DOWNLOAD COMPLETE. ENCRYPTION SECURE." the console screen flashed green.

I pulled the glowing USB drive from the port and slipped it inside the inner pocket of my tailored jacket.

Right at that exact second, the industrial plasma torch outside cut through the final locking bolt of the blast door. The heavy steel panel was kicked inward with a deafening metallic bang, collapsing onto the concrete floor in a cloud of thick white smoke and sparks.

The scar-faced gunman stepped through the smoke, his silenced pistol pointed directly at my head, his eyes burning with lethal intent.

“Game over, Mrs. Vance,” he growled, pulling back the hammer of the gun. “You talked too much.”

I didn't run. I didn't flinch.

I simply raised my left wrist and pressed the red button on my corporate smartwatch.

“Actually,” I whispered softly, “you listened too little.”
